Nic Cage - Comic Book Fan Becomes Ghost Rider

Nic Cage was born Nicolas Coppola, he took his screen name from the Marvel comic book character Luke Cage, Hero for Hire. An avid comic book fan, Nic has pursued starring roles in other comic book movies before. He was fitted for Superman costumes in a 90's production attempt that also had Tim Burton directing, and he was even considered for the villainous Green Goblin in Spider-Man.

Cage said he's been a fan of Ghost rider since he was a kid. "The Faust-like storyline was so original for a marvel comic book character. He's fresh, it's time for a new kind of super-hero."

As for finally getting a super-hero role, Cage says "It's been a long time I've been trying to do it. I've always thought the right character is the one that you end up doing. It's a better match than Superman for me."

Ghost Rider Comics

In July 2006, a new ongoing monthly series began, witten by Daniel Way with art by Mark Texeira. It features Johnny Blaze still in Hell, desparately trying to escape. At the end of the first issue, he is manipulated into bringing Satan to Earth "with a mission". This Ghost Rider features Johnny Blaze as the human host, resembling the 90's Dan Ketch Ghost Rider as does the movie's.

Marvel first used the name "Ghost Rider" for a western comics character before the fiery avenger debuted in 1972's fifth issue of Marvel Spotlight. This incarnation was created by by writers Roy Thomas and Gary Friedrich, with artist Mike Ploog. In 1973-'83 Ghost rider would carry his own series.

In 1990 Ghost Rider returned, but this time Daniel Ketch was the new Ghost Rider. After his sister was injured by gangsters, Danny came in contact with a motorcycle posessed with the "Spirit of Vengeance." This spirit had originally been a Puritan man named Noble Kale, an ancestor of both Blaze and Ketch. Johnny Blaze reappeared in this series as a supporting character and was revealed to be Ketch's brother. The series ended in 1998. In 2001 and 2005 two Johnny Blaze mini-series were launched.
