Gibson Les Paul Standard vs Traditional

The Gibson Les Paul Standard is such a historic musical instrument that some might wonder why does it need to be updated.

On the latest version it has gone farther than any other to meet a demand that has plagued it since day one, its weight.

Gibson Les Paul Standard Review

Sound: 5/5
Playability: 5/5
Construction Quality: 5/5
Finish: 5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

There are many players that consider the Gibson Les Paul Standard to be heavy, at the same time there are those who believe that the weight is part of the reason these guitars sound the way they do.

This is the first time that the Les Paul Standard is made to be lighter by placing acoustic chambers inside the body. The body regardless of being chambered is still thick. And despite being one of the most legendary guitars it includes a bunch of new tweaks that make it feel very modern.

The pickups are the popular Burstbucker Pro humbuckers, I've owned these pickups for the last 7 years and I never get tired of their sound. I find them a lot more balanced than the Gibson 490R and 498T, or popular 3rd party choices like the Seymour Duncan JB and Jazz humbuckers.

The neck features an asymmetrical design that doesn't conform to the regular 50's or 60's necks. It combines the best of both worlds and combined with the Plek'd set up is a delight to play. Other nice items are: locking tuners, locking input jack, locking Tonepros bridge and a very cool transparent control cover.

Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional Review

Sound: 5/5
Playability: 5/5
Construction Quality: 5/5
Finish: 5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Gibson Les Paul Standard Traditional features a full mahogany body. This is something that adds to the thick sound associated with these guitars. It has the same level of construction, binding and finish that is offered in all Gibson Les Paul Standard guitars, yet it's cheaper.

Like the regular Les Paul Standard it's offered as a regular and Plus. There's also a Pro version. The regular and the Plus are identical except for the flamed sunburst finishes in the Plus. The Pro comes with Grover locking tuners while the regular comes with vintage Kluson.

The pickups in the Traditional are the 57' Classic, in the Pro version the bridge pickup is a Burstbucker 3'. A feature exclusive to the Traditional Pro is the push/pull volume knobs to split the coils of the pickups.

Gibson Les Paul Studio Review

Sound: 4.5/5
Playability: 4.5/5
Construction Quality: 4.5/5
Finish: 4.5/5
Overall Value: 5/5

The Gibson Les Paul Studio has been very popular ever since it came out in 1982. A lot of guitar players choose practicality over luxury, after all how careful do you have to be every time you stand up to play with over $2500 on your back.

Most of the luxury of the Gibson Les Paul Standard has been stripped, yet the essence of what makes this guitar so good has been kept.

The Gibson Les Paul Studio resembles a light version of the Les Paul Standard. It comes with 490R/498T pickups which have a pronounced upper midrange, making them not as vintage as the Burstbucker pickups.

The body is full mahogany. And even though there's no binding there's still a very nice looking maple top. It comes in a hard shell case.
