Gigi's Troop to Troop Lapbook

Ranked #10,680 in Culture & Society, #215,250 overall

Girl Scout lapbook: From discovery to display!

This lens is written along with my daughter. She was working on a Troop-to-Troop badge. Her leader gave a list of requirements. The Troop to Troop patch is a chance to learn more about military service and history. The number of activities needed to earn the patch depend on which "group" the girls are in. Because Gigi is a Junior, she was required to complete 6 activities.

As Gigi worked on the badge, she wrote the responses in a spiral. I showed her how to make a lapbook. She then became interested in completing the research so she could design the mini-booklets for the lapbook. I was proud of her for completing her assignment - especially without my reminding her!

Let's start with the activities she completed. They are in order according to their positions in her lapbook.

Music and Military Posts

Each branch of the military has a song. Find the music and lyrics for one and sing it.
Gigi used this site to find the lyrics and music to the songs.
Patriotic songs

She decided on the army song, "The Army Goes Rolling Along."
This site had the actual music so that she could learn the tune:
The Army Goes rolling Along

Locate on a map and research at least one active military base in Texas.
Gigi selected Fort Hood in Killeen, Texas. She identified Killeen on an outline map of Texas, then wrote facts underneath.

5 Branches, 3 Organizations and 1 Military Academy

List five branches of the military. Learn at least two facts about each branch.
Gigi used Google to find information on the names of the five branches. She wrote the
names of the branches on the points of the star. The facts are written on the backs of
the points.

What is a veteran? Learn about veteran's organizations in our area and what they do.
www.va.gov/kids

Gigi made three mini books - one each for the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The cover has the name of the organization. The inside lists information.

All of the branches of the military have schools of higher education. Select one and research it.

Which branch of the military has two job opportunities not open to women. List them.

What are the general requirements to enlist? Be sure to study age, education, physical conditioning, and gender.

Welcome Home a Hero

At DFW airport, everyday, soldiers enter the country for R & R. This is one of the programs the USO is involved in. If you look near the bottom right hand corner of the bottom right photo, you will see a lapel pin that is given to those who are welcoming family. More information about the USO can be found on www.uso.org

The Purple Heart

What is the Purple Heart and how is it earned?
The information for this booklet came from www.purpleheart.org. Gigi wrote the facts inside of the heart. When the heart is closed, you see a purple half heart with the title on it.

Veteran Interview

Interview a veteran. Learn what it's like to serve your country.
Gigi interviewed a family member. He has just returned from Iraq. Sample questions can be found here.

Cards for Vets

Gigi likes to draw, color, stamp - she's a very artsy girl. She made greeting cards that could be signed by friends. These cards can then be delivered to VA hospitals. When she made her lapbook, a pocket was created by joining the two red folders. She stored the assignment sheet and the cards in this pocket.

Badge Book

The requirements for the badges can be found in this book. You find the category you are interested in and see what badges are there. There may be ten to eleven items, and you get to choose the six you want to do to earn the badge.
