Girl Scout Leaders!

This lens is about Girl Scouts. I will provide some beginning information for new & experienced leaders.

We'll give you some history of Girl Scouts and the founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Some websites to help you present ideas to the girls. The history and background of Thinking Day.

Why Girl Scouts?!!!

I am a Girl Scout volunteer. I have been with the organization for almost 15 years. I have served in a number of roles over the years (trainer, cookie mom, Service Unit specialist). I have been a troop leader for all levels and currently a Cadette troop leader. I believe in Girl Scouting! It can provide so many things to girls - confidence, leadership skills and so much more!

The History of Girl Scouting

History ...

I believe that it is important for everyone involved in an organization to know who started it and why. I believe the girls should know about the person behind Girl Scouts also. As they get older, they can begin to understand the "why" of Girl Scouting.
Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts in 1912. The girls can relate to her by reading/hearing some of the stories of her childhood.

“The work of today is the history of tomorrow, and we are its makers."
-- Juliette Gordon Low”

Juliette Gordon Low's Birthday!

The girls will LOVE it when they discover that her birthday is October 31! A troop birthday party can be held in her honor around that date!

This website: Scouting for All Seasons: Happy Birthday Daisy! has some great ideas on how to recogonize Juliette Low's birthday.

Thinking Day

Thinking Day is February 22nd. It is a day that Girl Scouts and Girl Guides "think" about each other. Troops can learn about troops in other countries or just explore diversity. There can be parities, ceremonies, or troop gatherings to celebrate the day. It is an important part of Girl Scouting. I will do a separate lens on this topic in the future. To help you jump start you, Scouting for All Seasons-Thinking Day will give you a great starting place.

Girl Scout Experience

"A good Girl Scout or Girl Guide experience is not dependent on the state of the handbooks we use, but on the loving guidance of the devoted leaders who believe in the program."-Unknown author

Girl Scout Birthday

The beginning of Girl Scouting in the US began on March 12th. That week is designated as Girl Scout week every year. There are many things troops can do to celebrate that event. The troop could do a party, ceremony or participate in a GS Sunday or Sabbath service. Scouting For All Seasons-Happy Birthday Girl Scouts! gives a lot of ideas!
