FALL - FEATURED ARTIST: CATHARINE NEWELL

A loop from April to Catharine and the new release of artists chosen for Emerge '06

BUT...first, Ms. Catharine Newell

Portland, OR - Bullseye is pleased to present Catharine Newell's figurative kilnformed studio glass during her solo exhibition, "Alone Together," at the Bullseye Gallery October 3 - November 18, 2006.

"Each of us has very personal perceptions about how the world works based on our personal history, which is composed of memory," says Newell. "It is that persistence of memory, constituting the singularity of the individual, that I am driven to respectfully present in my work." Newell uses frit and layers of glass in the "painting with light" tradition, creating her signature portraits: sliced panels revealing glimpses of faces and movement. New works in her Alone Together series are installations of figurative sketches on layered, crumpled sheets of glass "paper." Scattered throughout the space or stacked in sheaves, these are collections of personalities-- captured but fleeting, momentary yet revealing....more

LATE SUMMER - FEATURED ARTIST: APRIL SURGENT

BREAKING NEWS:Pilchuck Glass School Announces Selection of 2006 Emerging Artists in Residence

Seattle, Wash. - July 28, 2006 - Pilchuck Glass School announced today the selection of six outstanding young artists to participate in the school's seventeenth annual Emerging-Artists-in-Residence Program following review of 36 applications submitted by artists hailing from eight countries. Those selected are Sean Albert, Stine Bidstrup, Josh Kerner, Jung Sun Oh, April Surgent, and Erika Tada. They will live and create new bodies of work at Pilchuck's Stanwood campus from September 18 through November 10, 2006.

April Surgent, a native of Missoula, Montana who currently lives in the Puget Sound region, believes "a constant growth in my technical abilities and methods are as important for the final object as are the ideas behind the work." Capping studies at Detroit's College for Creative Studies with a bachelor's degree (with honors) from Australia National University School of Art in Canberra, Surgent has continued informal studies at North Lands Creative Glass Center in Lybster, Scotland, Seattle's Pratt Fine Arts Center, Bullseye Glass in Portland, Oregon, and Pilchuck Glass School. During her residency Surgent will employ large-scale castings, prints and coldworking to explore the link between person and place.

Artist's Statement...

"My work investigates the importance of the inherent link between person and place, says April Surgent. "Places have the power to shape people's perceptions of themselves and others, and to affect what and how we think, feel, see, remember and act. Having a natural bond to places, we are often understood and understand ourselves through them."

Mr. Reekie's technique...

"David says of his work that 'through surreal uses of situation and perception. I have tried to illustra aspects of human behaviour..often I used ironic, sometime macabre humour to make a point!' David talked about his sources of inspiration like newspaper photographs and the importance of drawing in his work. He came with a sketch book stuffed full of images.

This PDF will describe his mould making process using both clay and wax models, colouring techniques, and firing process."
