Glass Fusing Made Easy

Welcome to the sizzling world of glass fusing.  It is exciting to take a few pieces of glass, cut them into a design, and fuse them in a kiln.  There are many techniques for glass fusing.

I love making jewelry using my kiln.  Dichroic glass is my favorite medium.   Each piece is so uniquely different.  Sun reflects off of these pieces displaying different colors with each turn.

Dichroic glass adds drama and excitement to a each piece of jewelry. The reflective exterior of Dichroic glass can add a stunning touch to any fused glass piece. It makes breath taking pieces of art or jewelry. Dichroic is an extremely expensive glass.  Fortunately, just a tiny piece of this glass can add excitement to your pieces.

Glass Fusing and Slumping

Glass fusing and slumping are also called warm glass , or kiln working. Heating glass in a kiln until it reaches a temperature between 1100 and 1750 degrees Fahrenheit. This process is done using a kiln to join two or more pieces of glass together.

All glass is not the same and you need to know if your glass is compatible before attempting to fuse pieces together. If you use glass that is not compatible, it can crack or separate.

Glass softens as it is heated, and if heated further, it begins to melt and flow. When heating two or more pieces of glass together, they will first stick, or tack together. If you apply further heat, they will melt together, flatten out, and become a solid piece of glass.

Air bubbles can occur if you place pieces in such a way that it can not be released during firing. Watching your schedule and placement of glass pieces can avoid most air bubbles.

Glass can also be slumped into a mold. When slumped into a mold, the glass will take the shape of the mold. Slumping glass will allow your to make a plate, bowl or just about any shape.

Glass can also be draped over a mold, or slumped through a ring. There are a multitude of other types of manipulation that can be done in a kiln.
