Glass Vessel Sinks are the most popular and most widely-available vessel sinks today. They come in different color combinations and can even have printed images placed between glass layers. They are relatively cheap, very easy to clean up and maintain. But they can also break fairly easily. Quick temperature changes drain over-tightening, improper installation and strong impact can cause it to crack or even shatter. If you would like glass vessel sinks, make sure that you choose one that is made of tempered glass as it will mostly likely not do damage on to your countertop in case it breaks.

Glass Vessel Sinks & Your Bathroom Type

As the popularity of Glass Vessel Sinks has grown, so has the number of beautifully hand-crafted products that practically demand exhibition. By sitting entirely above-counter, vessel sinks can be displayed for their beauty as well as their functionality. The great thing about glass vessel sinks is they are not reserved for use in any one type of bathroom. Modern designs, conservative spaces, rustic décor and everything in between can all be enhanced by a vessel sink. Thus, the aesthetic this type of sink accommodates is rather extensive.

All of these sinks are extremely durable and easy to maintain if you just educate yourself on the methods. By using gentle cloths and cleaners you can keep them looking beautiful for many years to come-and they will reward you with style and elegance.
  1. Fused and Slumped: Different pieces of glass are heated and allowed to melt together and then cooled into a solid smooth piece. Once the artist has the solid piece it is placed over the sink mold and heated just enough that it "slumps" into the mold. Then, it is quickly cooled to avoid cracking.
  2. Hand Blown Glass: This may be what you typically think of when you think of artistic glass, but it is also used in producing glass sinks. The artist heats the glass at the end of a hollow pipe or tube and then blows into the tube to make a hollow center. Then the artist is able to shape and later cut the glass to fit the desired shape.
  3. Mosaic Glass: This is done by using cold cut glass pieces glued to a glass sink bowl and which are then grouted, cemented, sealed, and coated with a finish.

Glass Sink Maintenance and Care

Glass sinks might be durable, but it must be properly maintained to make sure it lasts a long time.

  • You should clean it with plain water or with a mild glass cleaner regularly and wipe the sink dry every after use so that water spots do not develop. If your sink is textured, make sure that you wipe the outside area regularly. Never use abrasive bathroom cleaners as they can scour or full the glass surface.
  • Do not ever allow metals, steel or other glass objects to come in contact with the glass as they can chip or scratch its surface.
  • Never allow boiling hot water to flow into the sink as it may cause the glass to crack.

Glass Vessel Sink Installation Video

A glass vessel sink can be installed sitting on the countertop ("above counter mounting) or it can be sunk down up to a third or even half of its height. Some vessels are actually a hybrid of a drop-in style sink and a vessel - i.e. they are designed to partially sit above the countertop.
