Glass Etching An Inspiring and Creative Glass Art

I love crafts. Most of the crafts that I enjoy involve yarn in some fashion, you know, knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, cross stitch, whatever! I love them all. But I have only just recently become interested in Glass etching as a fun pastime. I saw it on youtube, of all places. I have included a couple videos in this lens.

You will find that glass etching is a very special craft, and that you will make some gorgeous items that will become cherished, either has heirlooms or gifts.

This craft is not overly difficult, and it is very fun, You will find that the process of etching will make you feel relaxed and quite accomplished. Even beginners pick up on it quite quickly.

It is really rather remarkable. I hope you will enjoy it too.

Glass Art - What You'll need to Get Started

Glass Etching is truly Glass Art

Like any other project you will need to gather the necessary equipment.

First you will need an etching cream, there are different priced creams. An inexpensive one is adequate for your first attempts at this. Also, you might want to start on a plain glass, like an old drinking glass, that you won't mind to discard, for your first project.

Not that your first project won't be absolutely spectacular but why take chances. Later you will be ready to start etching your windows and your most beautiful wine glasses. But at first, use a little caution.

You may want to get a pair of gloves and even a facemask, read what the etching cream recommends. The fumes can be awful if you are not careful. Etching cream can be harmful for your body if not used with care. This is the reason along with the fact that you are dealing with glass, that this is not a good craft for children.

You can also try etching drinking glasses, jars, windows, glass in a picture frame, and any other type of glass you can think of, your imagination is your only limit.

What ever glass you choose, it must be cleaned and dry before you start.

Glass Etching Learning Process

The next step...

The next piece of equipment is a stencil. It is wise to start with the larger prints that don't require a lot of detail work. After you have mastered the technique you will be ready to go for all the dramatic details that make etchings so breathtaking.

Clip art works well, or you can find etching kits that have stencils ready for you to use. Like the starter kit above.

Use carbon paper to trace your stencil onto contact paper. White paper works best. You will want to use a utility knife to cut out your design from the contact paper or a pair of small detail scissors would work as well.

When you cut out the design, leave at least an inch or two of paper around it to make application onto the glass easier. Stick the contact paper to the glass, making sure that all the edges are firmly stuck down. And then follow your etching cream's directions to apply a thick coat of the cream with a foam brush or paper towel.

Sandcarving is another beautiful type of Glass Etching

Here is a remarkable example of this beautiful art form

SandCarving is another form of Glass Etching

Another type of etching is a process called sandcarving. This technique can create very interesting glass etchings because you can carve three dimensional art into the glass. A sandblaster is required to etch a design into the glass. You can see other sandcarving examples here.

Okay So How Do You Feel? Are You Interested In Glass Etching?

I love crafts, I really do, But I actually thought glass etching was done by scratching the glass with some kind of sharp object. I was so surprised and pleased to find out differently. Have you learned something new? Do you think you will give glass etching a try?

Do you think glass etching looks fun? Will you give it a try?

Yes! It looks so interesting and I love the beautiful pieces.

Graceonline says:

I do think it looks fun, and a cool project for a detail-oriented person like me. Still, I have so many problems with chemical allergies, that I have to steer clear. I'm picking the yes side because, even though I cannot do it, I would like to.

scarlettohairy says:

I tried glass etching once and it was fun. I need to give it another try. Your photos are beautiful!

ckolander says:

I thought about trying it before just never got around to it. I love the etching on the doors! My husband wants to install an indoor glass door so I may have to try this on it!

jenniferteacher says:

I really did think it was done by scratching the glass. LOL I may try it-- it's very pretty. I really like that tree!

WildWilliams says:

Glass is an amazing medium. I make fused glass jewelry and have used etching cream to decorate some pieces. There are several methods to decorate glass. As you described, etching cream is a chemical process. Other methods worth looking into are Hand Engraving which utilizes using a spinning Carborundum cutting wheel and a steady hand, another method is sandblasting.

No, I am all thumbs, It is not for me.

Glass Art Can Be Very Dramatic in 3D

Once you have applied the cream you will want to allow it to set according to the directions of your specific cream. Read your instructions carefully. You can get extra help by talking to your salespeople at your craft supply stores. The two in my area that I frequent are Michael's and Joann's. They can recommend the best brand for the type of project you are about to undertake.

You will find the cream will work its magic before your very eyes. And once it is done and ready you will be able to peel away the contact paper and you'll have a beautiful piece of glass to cherish forever. The Magic is in the cream!
