Mike and Alan came up with an astounding idea to use other domain extensions besides the common ones such as dot com, dot net, dot org, etc.
They were aware that in the mid 1990's, the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority assigned each nation a country code. These codes were designed to give each country an address for their own internet needs. They knew that a good, easy to remember country code could be a viable alternative to .com.
They focused on the domain .WS, which belonged to the tiny island of Samoa. Their thinking was that the abbreviation .WS could be marketed as the 'WebSite' top-level domain.
After contacting the King of Samoa and flying over to his country to meet with him, Mike and Alan finally secured the domain contract after much ado.
In November 2000, less than 9 months after launching .WS to the WorldWide global internet community, GDI had sold over 100,000 .Ws registrations to companies and individuals in over 180 countries.
In October, 2002 GDI ranked 37th on the list of 500 fastest growing companies in the United States as ranked by Inc magazine.
