Why Organic Foods Are So Important And The Health Benefits

Ranked #13,028 in Healthy Living, #206,710 overall

Organic Food

The demand for organic food has increased substantially. As a reflection of our backlash against this wholesome niche market is being catapulted into the limelight at a rate of 20 percent growth annually. Increased education in health issues and our growing awareness of the environment's fragility are two reasons why people are turning towards an alternative life. Concern for our future generations is also big on the agenda. Naturally, along with the hype comes the debate on the validity of organics in a country that prides itself on a "clean green" image, particularly when we may have to fork out two to three times more for our environmentally-friendly produce.

The Organic Food Handbook: A Consumer's Guide to Buying and Eating Organic Food

By Ken Roseboro

More and more people are eating organic food because they want a healthier and safer alternative to "conventional" food. They want food produced without toxic pesticides, Order Now!antibiotics, hormones, and genetic engineering. They want food that sustains both human health and the environment.

NUTRITION

Contrary to public perception, the premiums added to organic produce do not guarantee you will get a more nutritious item. From many of the studies conducted, none has found organics to contain extra benefits. Instead, what does make a difference to nutritional content is the climate and variety of stock. For example, a tomato grown in one area under certain weather conditions can have 30 times more vitamin C compared with another grown in a different region. Anything grown well, whether organic or not, will be good for you.

However, the organic industry defends the stance that organic is healthier because soil supporting crops grown using conventional farming methods has long been leached of its original goodness, the opportunity for the plant to reach its natural potential in hindered - as would happen with our organisms if raised on a diet of vitamin supplements. Plants relying on a water-soluble fertilizers for their sustenance and soil's biological activity is discouraged.

TASTE

The taste factor also appears to be clouded. Organic produce is far more delectable to the palate; indeed, biting into an organic strawberry conjures idyllic images. Yet, on the small amount of research conducted, there has been no establish trend to support the claim.Taste often depends on ripeness. Unlike organic farmers who leave the fruit to ripen on the vine, commercial growers may pick the fruit earlier in order to get it to the market in good condition.
Theoretically, if they pick most fruit at the mature green stage, all the natural precursor chemicals should be there. Expert suggest that selling produce out of season - discouraged in organic philosophy - can also affect taste. The general public is now into a system of buying what they want, when they want it. As these seasons increase either side for a particular crop, people then tend to get beautiful-looking things that are less tasty,

COST

With growers now producing organic fruit and vegetables far superior to the once-spurned spotty specimens, the issue raising consumers' eyebrows most is cost. Prices will decrease if more farms become commercially viable. However, organic farming will always be more expensive because it's more labor-intensive. If you don't use chemicals you have to use other methods, which inevitably involve a high human input - such as weeding by hand rather than using a herbicide.

It's also more costly because organic farms use smaller, holistic production systems that often require crop rotation, allowing the land to lie fallow to recuperate and using composting systems better suited to smaller areas.

Consequently, you don't get the same economy of scale. If the toll on environmental degradation caused by ordinary farming methods were considered, the price different between organic and conventional produce would be a lot less. You need to take into account the costs of the use of pesticides on society as a whole. If it costs more for society to clean up the problem caused by conventional farming, then in the long run, there can be quite an argument that organics are actually cheaper.

A big plus for the community is the organic industry's gentle nudge to get people thinking more carefully about the health and fundamentals of food. Like the nature of organic, a whole, balanced diet is what matter most. The hope is that people will buy more organic foods because they will buy more of the healthful kind of foods.
