Domain Registrars
Domain registrars have been around since the 80s. At first there was only one organization that can actually register domains for individuals. Then over time additional organizations were licensed. More and more became licensed at one point it could be said that there were too many. So the world of registrars increased greatly but since then has decreased. There are now only a few and that seems to have helped the industry quite a bit. We will dive a little bit into the past the not so fast meaning a little while ago, and the present.
Commercial
Before we get started, here is a funny video put out by one of the most popular registrars. They also offer a godaddy promo code and here is one of their videos that made it on TV.

First Registrar
The first registrar does our license is still a registrar today. That would be network solutions. The idea was to first allow only one organization to control the domains. The thought was that since these, the domains, our unique that only one place should be a register them so would not be any confusion and allowance of multiple people registering the same domain. Over time this became less of an issue and the real issue became the monopoly of one controlling all domains. That is not always a bad thing however what happened was that their customer service and response time was terrible I remember back in the day when you changed the DNS for a domain it could take a week before was updated. So if you wanted to move your website from one hosting provider to another you may have a week of down time, more or less. the update is almost instantaneous and with most good registrars is typically done within 10 to 30 minutes. That makes a huge difference.
The last thing you want when you own a website or have clients that you are working with is a delay. You do not have the weight more than 10 minutes these days for DNS to update. But in the past it could've taken a week and did in some cases. If you needed to move quickly because the server was down you're out of luck. No one would be would access the website into a DNS actually changed even though the site had physically move to another hosting provider. So with this type of service that first registrar which is still around today and does a very good job by the way had to open their doors. So now there was competition. So enter the period of additional competition and let's discuss what happened next.

Second Wave of Registrars
The second wave of registrars was quite different. Much like what happens and there is any type of legislation you are on one end of the spectrum and the next thing you know you're on the other end of the spectrum. In other words you started with a monopoly and the next thing you know you open the doors for everyone and now you have to many. Sometimes the issue is not too many but the quality of service that they are getting. While the first made the little slow this next batch had many issues and in some cases it was not just an issue of customer service for being slow but doing things wrong.
Present Day
Present day state the domain registrars is the ideal. You do not have a monopoly and you've also got rid of those they do things wrong or provide horrible service. So where we stand these days is that there is just a handful of registrars. They've each been around for quite a while and proven themselves. They all do a great job and provide awesome service. Regardless of who you might use you not have to worry about things not being done right. And many offer discounts such as this godaddy coupon found here. This is because each of them as I've said proven themselves. Just be happy that you do not have to deal with the issues of the past. I have used one registrar that lost some of my domain names, meaning I had lost the registrations and it wasn't even time to give them a great likely that registrar was taken over by another. The biggest thing for me was having my DNS take a week to update. Now those are no longer issues I can greatly appreciate today's registrars and their interfaces for making the usage of their service so much easier. by traceglass
