Going Green Doesn't Mean You Have to Change Your Whole Lifestyle

Wouldn't it be great if everyone in this world pitched in and lived a totally green life? The earth would be so much better off. While it's not likely that this scenario would actually occur, but the more people who pitch in with the little things, the more we can make a change for our planet's future.

Here are some small, but meaningful ways to do your part to help the environment:

Lights On/Off - Growing up, you probably heard your parents nag you about turning lights off when you left a room. I know I spend a good portion of my day turning off all the lights that my kids leave on.

By turning the lights off in a room where we don't need them, you're cutting down on the energy costs for supplying the room with light. You don't have to be in the dark. Just turn on lights where you need them and turn off the ones you don't.

Another great way to save some energy with lights is to replace your burned out bulbs with new compact fluorescent bulbs. They use a lot less energy so they save the environment and save you money.

Save water - How often do we brush our teeth at the sink with the water running while we're scrubbing away at our teeth? It's a habit most of us have gotten into over the years and never really got out of. By keeping the water running, you're wasting water, so turn the faucet off while you brush and only turn it on when you need it.

Some other great ways to save on water are to: install a low flow shower head, only run the dishwasher and washing machine when you have a full load, water your lawn in the early morning hours, and don't keep the water running when washing the dishes, the car or even the vegetables before dinner.

Take the clothes outside - Every time you use your dryer, you're using more energy than you need to. If it's a nice day out, hang the clothes up on a clothesline. Let the wind and the warm air dry them for you.

You'll be amazed at how good your clothes smell after being outside in the fresh air. Leave the dryer for the days you really need them. Hanging clothes to dry worked for the pioneers and it can for you too!

Get rid of the junk mail once and for all - Junk mail comes in droves every year to unsuspecting households. The junk we receive ultimately gets thrown out, which is like throwing away our precious trees. There are a few places to sign up to stop the junk mail from donning your doorstep. Save those trees and the environment by just saying no to mail you didn't ask to receive.

Do some of your reading and browsing online - Instead of getting 14 catalogs a month in the mail, save space and the environment by browsing through the pages online. No more stacks and clutter of catalogs getting in the way of your home and no more wasting trees to make them. View what you need online if your catalogs are available through the Internet.

You can also go paperless with many of your bills and statements. If you are one of those people that just throw these away when you get them it is a good idea to let the companies know to stop sending them.

Go 'GREEN' with your cleaning - There are too many chemical-based aerosol cleaning products seen in homes today. These can be harmful to us as well as the environment. The EPA has warned about the dangers of indoor air pollution.

Many of the cleaners that are under your sink are toxic to you while using them and to the environment they end up in.

Recycle - Recycling is one of the best ways to help keep the planet green. More and more communities are putting together recycling programs so recycling is becoming easier and easier. Call your local waste disposal company to see if there is a recycling program in your area.

Here are some amazing facts about recycling.
- Recycling your newspaper for one year would provide the same pulp as 2/3 of an acre of forest.
- Every glass bottle you recycle saves enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for 4 hours
- Recycling one aluminum can saves the energy needed to run your TV for 3 hours
- Manufacturing recycled paper produces 55% less air and pollution then making paper from trees
- Manufacturing cans from recycled aluminum produces 96% less air and water pollution than making them from raw materials

It's the little things in our daily lives that can make a huge difference for future generations to come. Do whatever you can to help out. If we each participate by implementing a greener life, even by taking small steps, we can provide a better earth for our children.
