Miracle Fruit Or Marketing Hype?

Goji Berries (also known as the Wolfberry) have become a very popular little fruit in the early 21st century. It has become to be known as somewhat of a miraculous berry with great health benefits and as such has been heavily marketed by some companies in the form of a juice or in dried form, but there is some debate about these claims.

Whatever the truth, the Goji Berry is a delicious food to snack on and no doubt has some of those reported benefits such as a18 Amino Acids and being extremely high in Vitamin C so I am attempting to grow some plants from the dried berries. I tried in 2010 but failed, so in 2011 I am trying again in a different season. Lets see how I go this time.

January 2010

My first attempt at growing the plants from seed. As it was past the peak of summer when I started this project, I think it was the wrong time of season to plant them. Just as the seedlings got going, the weather got cooler and they struggled.

Sprouted From Seeds That I Took Out Of Soaked Berries.

The berries used for the seedlings in this photo were the dehydrated ones that we sell at Raw Pleasure. I soaked the berries overnight and then removed the tiny seeds and soaked them for a few more days, until they started to sprout tails in the bowl of water that I had them in. I then took them out and planted them. A week later, this is what they looked like! As you can see, sprouting them in water got the process of germination happening really fast.

Goji Berry Seedlings From Planting The Berries Whole

These Sprouted From Planting The Whole Soaked Berries.

These are the seedlings that were grown by just planting the berries straight into the pots after soaking them overnight. As you can see, these were not quite as successful initially. Despite being planted before the other ones in the photo above, they have been overtaken and some did not grow at all. There were some ants in these pots the next day after the berries were planted, so that may have had something to do with their lack of success.

A YouTube User Grows Goji Plants

This is a pretty good series of videos on growing the Goji Berry plant from dried berries. He unfortunately does not show the initial process of planting the berries, but he explains it pretty well in the first video.

September 2011

I discovered that the Goji plants are deciduous and that they go dormant in the winter time which is why mine died off last time. They were not large enough by the time winter hit. I actually found two seedlings that came back the next summer, but we were readying to move house so I did not give them attention and they perished too. This time around I was prepared and planted at the start of spring.

Spring 2011, I am trying again

At the very start of Spring in the first few days of September I planted Goji Berries again. This time, I did not soak the berries, sprout the seeds or even remove the seeds from the dried berry. I just planted the dried Goji Berried directly into pots and watered them, hoping for the best. This method took a lot longer to get going initially, but I have some hardy little seedlings now which I will now separate into their own pots.

I planted 5 of the berries evenly spaced around the rim of this pot. As you can see, some of the berries did not sprout anything, but some of those that did have sprouted a number of seedlings due of he berries having numerous seeds in them. These are much bigger than my seedlings got to the last time that I tried. This photo was taken two months on in mid November.

These Ones Are Struggling

At the same time as I planted the berries in the pot above, I planted just one berry in each of these smaller pots and placed them in a shadier part of the house to see what would happen with both of the methods. As you can see, these ones have had little success with only a few of them sprouting at all and they are much smaller than the others. I will now move these around to the same part of the house that the other pot is in and see what happens.

Stay Tuned

I will be adding more photos of the plants progress as I go along and perhaps even a video or two of my own....maybe!

What Do You Think?

Do you believe that Goji Berries are as nutritious as they are made out to be?

No, it is just hype by companies trying to profit from them.

Absolutely. They are obviously nutritious or these companies would not sell them.

Yes I do think they are very healthy.
