A interesting and very apt lens for the times we live in. Personally, I am considering mining my sofa for nickels and dimes. So far, I am only in the planning stage.

This is very informative. I doubt I'd be doing any serious prospecting though. But I agree it sounds like an interesting hobby or family activity.
  • driftsdaughter Mar 20, 2011 @ 5:33 pm | delete
I have had some friends over the years that spent their weekends gold mining the local stream beds as a family hobby. This lens was more informative than all my conversations with them combined! Thanks so much, I think I would love to start participating in this hobby with my family too. It seems like a great way to teach geography, geology, and history to the kids all at once. Great topic, great lens!

Who hasn't dreamed of striking gold? What a neat idea to own your own claim even if you get nothing more than a fun camping spot out of it.
    Neat lens.

What a fascinating lens, love the way you explain things and have laid everything out. Your section on gold detectors was very of great interest especially as I have an entire lens dedicated to Bounty Hunter Gold and Metal Detectors... Thanks again for such an interesting lens.
    Warm Regards,
    Clive

I love this lens. I wouldn't normally be interested in gold mining, but I moved to Limousin, France and there is gold here. I have it in mind to write a lens about it soon.

I think everyone wishes that they could have a gold mining claim land! I never even thought there was still land out there to be purchased so never gave it much more thought. I saw the links to claims on this page. Now you've got me thinking about it!
  • Aug 18, 2008 @ 8:58 am | delete
Thanks for the information on gold claims. There is great interest in all aspects of gold mining these days, that's for certain.
  • Jul 19, 2008 @ 7:11 pm | delete
There are a lot of abuses of the 1872 Mining Law and claim "scamming" going on as well. I've been mining for nearly 30 years and have never seen anything like it. Thanks for the info and good luck to you.
