Golden Years Retirement Inns of your dreams

My mother's Retirement Inn took her, along with other resident neighbors, to the Whatcom County Tulip Fields - an extravagant display of acres and acres of bright blooming bulbs, in her region of Washington State. New York boasts The New York Botanical Gardens, with ever changing exhibits, nybg.org

Life in a retirement community can begin with the golden comfort of prepared meals in a luscious dining room, maid service with linens provided, on-site managers 24 hours/day, in-house and regional outings. Most Retirement Inns have their own busses, vans, and cars for transporting residents to area features, such as famous restaurants (well, at least locally famous), tours, water features, museums, shopping and so much much more.

Frequently, Retirements Inns have a "Doctor Day" - say on Tuesday - when their driver makes the rounds of the residents' medical providers' offices, clinics and hospitals for scheduled drop-off and pick-up later on.

Retirement homes visit cultural centers, such as libraries, senior centers, university and city lectures - you name it!

Whether elegant high-rise or rural cottage is your choice, it is best to thoroughly examine the terms and amenities offered in any retirement inn. See a selection of fine retirement communities in New York. Find free time and let staff tend to all the chores.

Make the List of the Rest of Your Life

you choose whatever you want & add it to whatever you need

It's important to Make a List of amenities that are important to you, those you prefer, and those you Can't Live Without, before making the tours of retirement centers.

1. Grab a cup of coffee or tea, or a glass of water & sit down at your table or desk. Use a pen you love, and make the list in any order whatsoever. Make it a real Brainstorming session.

This is a clarification process for you. It is meant to be enjoyable, without pressure, or self-judgment. Love yourself - love your future.

Use a Fresh Tablet, Notebook or Pad for List

be sure it has a pleasant aspect & that it won't get scribbled on

2. Use a favorite writing tool, and a large paper pad.

Dedicating a new spiral notebook, stationery set, quirky writing pad, or a piece of artists' drawing paper will bring the rewards of always knowing where your Retirement Home notes can be found.

Assign a certain homebase to the paper/notebookj/pad, such as a bookcase, desk drawer, bedside table, armchair lamp table, or the kitchen table. It's a good idea to keep the paper visible, as a memory jogger for times when you suddent want to make impromptu additions to your list.

*try to resist using your computer for this project. It's important to use all your senses, hence: aroma of the beverage, touch of the paper, sound of the old fashioned pen writing in the journal and sound of the journal as it unsnaps and closes, sight of the visuals on your get-away walk or drive.

3. Close your eyes and imagine the setting in which you prefer to spend retirement years - ok, the photo's a joke!

It may have been your grandparents' retirement home, but it's not for you. Do you need access to a worthy in-house library? Would you prefer to be within one block of the Subway? Do you need a private car with driver - some homes offer such.

Begin Writing Notes to Yourself about your GoldenYearsRetirementInns

preferences & requirements are not set in stone unless you say so

4. Note the specific aspects of your wishes under a Preferences column, and write your needs under a Requirements column. Perhaps you require a gluten-free gourmet diet and you occasionally need it delivered to your suite. On the other hand, maybe you are toying with the idea of plunking your fortune into your favorite nonprofit, or into a new trust for your grandchildren, and you want to live out your years in a modest studio apartment in a country retirement inn.

Allow yourself the freedom to "need" everything that you want, in the first drafts of your List. Right now you are just laying the undercoat on the wall, and you can take your time to decide in the color and environmental soundness of the finish coat. Go ahead and paint a few brush strokes. List your meal types, for instance. Do you need three bedrooms, or will one do?

Evaluate Your Lists for Your GoldenYearsRetirementInns

sleep on it! it's your future you are establishing

5. Take a break from list-making, for a walk, a meal, a visit, a subway zip downtown, or a trip to the local Senior Center. Get a fresh perspective. Once your list takes shape you will begin to see the city in a different light. Maybe you yearn for country life. New York State has small towns galors, with vibrant culture, and wide open spaced farms.

Return to your list, or take your list out along your journey, as new insights sprout. Add, move and shuffle list items. This process of sorting out the wants/needs resembles cultivating a garden. It needs your attention, like watering, fertilizing, and pruning. Don't get bogged down by spending too much time at the list in one setting. You are a garden too!

Rewrite Your List & Tour GoldenYearsRetirementInns

fresh and new and inspirational for your retirement living

6. Use your favorite pen, and rewrite your list. You can always refer back to the first one, with all it's reworkings, but having a fresh new list will show you the progress you are making. You will realize that your retirement goals are refined, and open to repeated polishing.

Now you are ready to do some Internet research, and schedule some tours. Your initial retirement home visits will likely bring more questions than answers - in reference to your own retirement. Accept the tour director's invitation to lunch. Look around and sample. Ask questions of residents as they congregate at the elevator. Note whether there is a long wait for the elevator. You are doing due diligence and you'll thank yourself for it. The Big Apple & the New York Countryside has Golden Years Retirement Inns

New York, city and state, has it all! The weather ever varies through the seasons. When it's spring you'll delight to the bright air and during summer the blooms will take the edge off the heat. Winter is winter, real and ranges through the degrees of rain and snow.

New Yorkers enjoy a livelier economy than 95% of the country, and residences definitely range from the bottom upwards of million dollar apartments. Retirement Inns range similarly from modest to luxurious, urban to country style.

If your choice is the city then you can live car-free and use a combination of walking to the corner market and using the bus and cabs around town. Many New Yorkers benefit from frequent walking to accomplish their errands and arrive back home to fine dining in their retirement homes. Living is gracious, busy, or calm as you choose.

Janet Hays fills us in on how we can retire in that great New York City, whether we have money or not: http://search.barnesandnoble.com

Nice approach to choosing a retirement inn. I haven't given a serious thought about it yet, but I guess at some point it's a good idea to envision retirement and have a plan in place. Stay blessed! :)
