Goldenseal is used as antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory herb. It can be used topically to open a sore or on inflamed skin for its soothing effect on inflamed mucous membranes.
Goldenseal functions as a topical antimicrobial more than as a general systemic antibiotic. Goldenseal for dogs does not seem to be as effective as an oral antibiotic, probably because the blood levels of the active ingredient, berberine, that can be achieved by taking goldenseal orally, are far too low to matter. Although not a great antibiotic, goldenseal for dogs and cats can be very beneficial in treating diseases that deal with the digestive tract, because it can contact the effected area directly.
