Good Medicine

Native American Spirituality has been a constant source of inspiration for me. Maybe it is because it is so connected to Mother Earth. They use the term 'good medicine' for things that are good for you and will heal you. That has always been intriguing to me. Mother Nature has a whole 'pharmacy' to heal our body, mind and soul. I will share some of my healing experiences, through my photography and poetry.
This Intro Image is a very good place to start. When I walk in the woods or anyplace in the natural world, I always feel better when I'm done, sometimes physically, sometimes mentally, sometimes spiritually, sometimes all 3. It doesn't get much better than that!
A Walk in the Woods is Good Medicine!
Read this blog for all kinds of Good Medicine, you will be surprised!
But be patient and come and visit again, I will be adding more good medicine from my 'apothecary'.

Animal Medicine

Having a pet is good medicine....

Anyone who has ever owned and loved a pet knows what animal medicine is, even if they don't know it by that name. My dog Faith, above, is my animal medicine. I rescued her from an animal shelter. Owning and caring for a pet is known to relieve stress, alleviate depression and lower blood pressure, just to name a few of the health benefits. Pets are great companions and are always happy when you come home! They also teach us so much about unconditional love.
Native American Spirituality has a more extensive definition for animal medicine and animal totems which accompany us on our soul journey through our lifetime(s). Where we were born on the medicine wheel is associated with a specific animal.

LAYLA

My 'Grandkitty'

My daughter and grandson have three kitties....this is their newest one. My daughter rescued her a few years ago when she was abandoned in a parking lot down in The Flats of Cleveland, Ohio....She was only a few weeks old and wasn't even weened from her Mama yet....My daughter saved her life and she is quite a character and a very beautiful cat!

Visiting your local zoo can be good medicine!

Observing animals...

You can learn so much from watching animal behavior and see how they interact among their 'family and friends'. I was watching these female lions and every so often I would snap a picture. I was there for at least a half hour, with impatient family members yelling at me to hurry. I just had a feeling that I would get a good shot, my patience paid off because I captured this display of affection.
To me watching these lions was good medicine because it was entertaining, I got a prize winning photo and it was a stress reliever.
The title of this picture is "Affectionate", it was taken at The Cleveland Zoo in the mid 80's. (Now known as The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo)
Photo Tip: Go to the zoo alone or with another photographer if you want ample time to take pictures and not feel rushed.
Also check with your local zoo to see if there are certain times when you might be able to take photos during hours that are not open to the general public.

Healing Music

Different music for different people, different music for different moods. Everyone has their favorites, if you like it and it makes you happy, it is good medicine. For now, I picked some Native American flute music titled "Earth Spirit" featuring R. Carlos Nakai, Seapeace by Georgia Kelly on the Celtic Harp, Chakra Suite by Steven Halpern, and a few others in the meditation and relaxation genre. I will feature different artists and different categories from time to time.

Walking is good medicine

Walking for health, walking for life...

Walking is good medicine. It is free, except for good walking or running shoes. I wear both, I find that sometimes running shoes give you a little more support. You can usually purchase a good quality pair starting around $40.00 to $100.00. Look for sales, the last pair I bought were $65.00 that I bought on sale for $34.99. Walking is a stress reliever, burns off calories, is good for your cardiovascular system, helps elevate your mood and is low impact and safe for just about everyone. Of course if you have any health concerns, check with your doctor before starting any new physical activity.

Gardening is Good Medicine

Being outdoors soaking up the elements.....

There is something about digging in the dirt, feeling it on your hands, smelling its fresh smell. It is even better if the reason you are doing so is to plant flowers or vegetables. Even pulling weeds can be a zen experience. There's just something about interacting with the earth, breathing fresh air and feeling the warm sun that can't be beat. If you live in an apartment, condo or don't have ample space in your yard for a garden, you can always plant a patio garden of flowers, herbs and maybe some tomato plants.
I've had many kinds of gardens. Small and medium sized vegetable gardens, flower beds, patio gardens, and a public victory garden when I was young. Actually, this is when I first learned how to plant a garden. I thank my parents for affording me this opportunity. Anyone who has planted a vegetable garden knows that the biggest payoff is having fresh vegetable and how good they taste.....I'm going through my archives and will come up with some photos soon.... many of my photos are traditional photos and aren't digitized yet.....

Hi Terri: I too am inspired by Native American spirituality. It's focus on nature as a way to connect with a larger "Great Spirit" puts me in touch with that spirit in me. When I take the time to connect in this way, it is very moving and puts me in a positive place. A couple of years ago, I discovered the bald eagles in the metro parks' rocky river reservation. They have been a source of spiritual joy for me. It seems they show up at times when I am most in need of "good medicine". They are an awesome sight to see.

Thanks for visiting and commenting and it's nice to know you are a kindred spirit! You'll have to give me more info on the bald eagles in the R.R. Reservation. Or show me where some of them have nested.

Having a hobby that I love and brings me joy. It is interesting how the heart can symbolize joy, and that happiness can be correlated with heart health, of many others. Listening to many of my favorite inspiring authors and speakers such as Wayne Dyer, Abraham Hicks, Joseph Murphy helps me.
