why I'm making this page about the seven last words of Jesus on the cross

I'm making this page about the seven last words of Jesus on the cross, first of all because the last words of a dying person usually are counted as important, but more than that, because these seven last words (and by-the-way the number 7 is the number of perfection or completion) reveal much both about the person and character of Jesus, but more importantly about the meaning and purpose of his crucifixion and death. So if his death to you is just another historical event, think upon his seven last words and you just may get a different picture.
Following the video on the crucifixion of Jesus and a listing of books on the subject, I list the seven words below and then, after another listing of books specifically on the 7 words, I offer prayers which I have written on each word.
I trust that, especially if you think his death was just a historical event, that you will read these prayers, think about their meaning and then make them your own.
If you are a believer in Jesus these prayers may serve to strengthen and renew your faith, but mainly I trust you will relay them to any non-believers you know.

Jesus, Keep Me Near the Cross: Experiencing the Passion and Power of Easter

This collection of readings, drawn from the writings and sermons of 25 classic and contemporary theologians and Bible teachers, focuses on the wonder of Christ's sacrifice.
Nancy Guthrie did a phenomenal editing job in piecing together various meditations on the Cross into a wonderfully unified book. And the selections she chose were truly the best of the best that these authors had to offer. Finding each of these was an amazing accomplishment in its own right.
I would recommend this to any who would like a good understanding of the cross from a wide set of generations, convictions and theologians. Just know, that it doesn't get better than Luther's chapter, but that doesn't mean the rest of the book gets "worse." Highly Recommended

The Day Christ Died

"Intensely dramatic . . . makes one feel that the 'greatest story ever told' was here told for the first time."
"A helpful word picture of 'the Jewish world' at the time of Christ." (Chicago Sunday Tribune )
"This is a book about the most dramatic day in the history of the world, the day on which Jesus of Nazareth died. It opens at 6 P.M. -- the beginning of the Hebrew day -- with Jesus and ten of the apostles coming through the pass between the Mount of Olives and the Mount of Offense en route to Jerusalem and the Last Supper. It closes at 4 P.M. the following afternoon, when Jesus was taken down from the cross. . . . The fundamental research was done a long time ago by four fine journalists: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. The rest has been added in bits and pieces from many men whose names span the centuries."--from the Foreword

Death on a Friday Afternoon: Meditations on the Last Words of Jesus from the Cross

The scope and implicit aim of this book are formidable; even more remarkable, this extended meditation accomplishes everything it set out to do. Don't expect a soppy, mystical, pie-in-the-sky reflection on the death of Christ. Here is a keen examination of tough love in action, the love of a God who accepted trial at the hands of His creatures and took on Himself their impudent verdict: "Guilty."

Each chapter is devoted to one of the Seven Words from the Cross, and in each case, Fr. Neuhaus shows how these words, spoken nearly two millenia ago on a certain Friday afternoon in history, still pierce our lives today--if we will let them. One of the great strengths of the book is its application of the truth of the Cross to modern life. What practical effect does each of these words have on each of us?

By no means is the material here limited to abstract theological discussion. It is simply and gently written, accessible to most people. I would think it would be especially valuable to those who might be curious as to why Christians believe that the Crucifixion is such a big deal. Neuhaus speaks of the suffering of specific people at specific times in history and shows how all suffering has been given meaning through the suffering of Christ.

This book is good for the mature Christian and the inquirer alike--something one can say about few books. Buy it for yourself and get a copy or two for your friends.

7)"FATHER, INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMEND MY SPIRIT." (Luke 23:46)

Prayers based on the 7 last words of Jesus on the cross

by James M. Becher

1)"Father Forgive them, for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)

Prayer: Forgive me, dear God for all my sins, known and unknown. Search my heart O' God and see if there is any evil way in me. Show me my hidden faults and cleanse me, as you promised in your word (IJohn1:9), for your son, Jesus' sake. And, dear Jesus, give me your spirit to forgive others who offend or hurt me, because they don't know what they are doing. Amen

2)"Today you shall be with me in Paradise." (Luke 23:43)

Prayer: Dear Lord Jesus, as you saved in one instant the dying thief on the cross, help me to realize that the moment I place my trust in you, I am saved for all eternity. This I now do. I say with the thief, "Remember me." I say this in faith, knowing you will hear my prayer and remember me. I ask you to set up your kingdom in my heart. Make my heart your throne, dear Lord Jesus. In your saving name, amen.

3)"Woman behold your son%u2026.behold your mother." (John 19:26-27)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, who in your dying hour showed concern for your mother and your dear disciple, help me that no matter what suffering I am going through in this life, to still be concerned with my relatives and close friends. And thank you that through you we may become part of the family of God. Teach us more of what this means. In your loving name, amen.

4)"My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46)

Prayer: Father God thank you for sending your only son, Jesus, to die for me. I realize that it was because of my sins which he was bearing that you were forced to forsake your beloved son in the hour of His death, for you are holy and cannot look upon sin. I accept the fact that He bore all of my sins on the cross and I thank you that on the basis of His death for me you are willing to accept me into your family. I accept your invitation to join your family by accepting your son only and sufficient eternal savior. I thank you for your promise never to leave or forsake me. Thank you, dear God, in your son's dear name. Amen.

5)"I thirst" (John 19:28)

Prayer: Dear Jesus, who felt the pangs of physical thirst as you hung on the cross, but bore it to the end because of the greater spiritual thirst which you had for my soul, I thank you. Now my soul thirsts for you and your righteousness. Grant that I may evermore drink of the living water of your Holy Spirit. In your sanctifying name, Amen.

6)"It is finished." (John 19:30)

Prayer: Thank you dear Jesus for your finished work on the cross which bought eternal salvation for me. I realize that I can add nothing to this (nothing of good works, church attendance, baptism or prayers, all of which are important, but none of which can help in any way to earn my eternal salvation.) I need only accept the gift of eternal life purchased for me at so great a price and live in thankfulness for this great gift received. Thank you, dear Lord Jesus, in your saving name, Amen.

7)"Father, into your hands I commend my spirit." (Luke 23:46)
Dear Lord Jesus, who committed your spirit to your Father in the hour of your death, I now commit my entire being, body, soul and spirit, into your saving hands. Give to me the power of your Holy Spirit that I may love and serve you always, and, through the power of that same Holy Spirit, spread the good news of your saving love to sinners everywhere. Thank you, dear Lord. In your powerful name, Amen.

The cry of Jesus on the cross (Mark 15:34 & Psalm 22:1)

The 4th word of Jesus on the cross

This book presents a multi-level approach to "Mark 15:34" arguing that a contextual reading of "Ps 22:2" does not negate or dilute the presentation of Jesus as one in distress.

Jesus' Cry from the Cross: Towards a First-century Understanding of the Intertextual Relationship Between Psalm 22 and the Narrative of Mark's Gospel (Library of New Testament Studies)

List Price: $130.00
Used Price: $123.65

Using a multi-level approach to "Mark 15:34", and contrary to the opinion of the majority of Markan scholarship, a contextual reading of "Ps 22:2" does not serve to negate or dilute the presentation of Jesus as one in distress. Rather, such a reading enhances this aspect of his death by underscoring his identity as a Righteous Sufferer who experiences suffering but has the promise of vindication.
