The Goodwood Revival

The Goodwood Revival is a Spectacular Weekend for all Classic Car and Bike Enthusiasts. It is also like stepping back to a much nicer age as thousands of people enter into the spirit of the event by dressing in period clothing. This is my tribute to this wonderful annual event.

The Goodwood Revival

Historic Motor Racing Circuit Annual Event

The Goodwood Revival is the UK's best historic motor racing event and is probably without equal worldwide, it's only event of its kind to be staged in the golden age of the Fifties and Sixties. As well as recreating the golden era of motor sport, the Revival offers no holds barred, wheel-to-wheel racing around the most original classic motor racing circuit in the world, a circuit untouched by modern motorsport lunacy .

The Revival recreates the glory days of motor racing at The Goodwood Motor Circuit, between the years of 1948 and 1966. During this time, it hosted motor racing of all kinds, including Formula One, the famous Goodwood Nine Hours race and the celebrated Tourist Trophy sports car race.

Now, for three days each September, the circuit stages a historic race meeting for the kind of cars and motorcycles that would have competed at Goodwood during 1948-1966. The circuit echoes to the spine-tingling bark of golden-age Grand Prix cars from the Fifties and Sixties, thundering sports and GT cars, as well as historic saloon cars and little-seen Formula Juniors. Many of these important historic racing cars are driven by famous faces from motor sport past and present. Sir Stirling Moss, John Surtees, Sir Jack Brabham, Phil Hill, Derek Bell, David Coulthard, Damon Hill, Gerhard Berger, Johnny Herbert, Wayne Gardner, Giacomo Agostini and the late, great Barry Sheene have all taken part at the Revival.

But the Revival is far more than a series of races for historic cars: it is a magical step back in time and a chance for visitors to revel in the romance and theatre of motor racing as it used to be. The lovingly restored circuit is unchanged from its heyday, and great lengths are taken to ensure that everything on the site is exactly as it was. This means that most visitors wear appropriate period clothing and no modern vehicles are allowed within the circuit perimeter throughout the weekend. There are also theatrical sets that bring the past back to life and a celebration of the aviation heritage with some stunning aerial manoeuvres throughout the skies above this WWII former aerodrome, as well as a fantastic selection of rarely-seen pre-1966 aircraft on static display in the Freddie March 'Spirit of Aviation'.

This is the only event that places motor racing into a carefully choreographed historical backdrop. The result is a truly unforgettable experience, and an atmosphere unlike any other sporting event. In combination with the highly-acclaimed Festival of Speed, the Revival ensures that Goodwood offers a medley of motor sport delights unrivalled throughout the world.

Getting the Goodwood Look - Fashion Tips for Ladies

Fashions for Ladies

For that sophisticated couture look, epitomised by Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, try wearing a voluminous dress clinched with wide belt, slender high heels, glamorous hat with matching sleek gloves, and seamed nylon stockings. Striking make-up with polished 'de rigeur' look, dark eyeliner, false lashes and bright red lipstick is essential to complete this immaculately groomed look.

If the classical style of the English country garden is more appealing, how about a floral summer frock or twin set and pearls and matching tweed suit, accompanied by a 'church' hat, fox fur, small handbag and gloves to match. A little bit of rouge wouldn't go amiss either - Miss Marple and her friends would doubtless approve.

For a more daring, casual look, try a flared skirt with petticoat, topped with a brightly coloured jumper. Or maybe a pair of trousers or capri pants and short-sleeved blouse, with pumps or deck shoes, and bright scarf knotted 'cowboy' fashion at the neck. Dark sunglasses and vibrant red lipstick were also an iconic fashion of the era - think 'Marilyn Monroe'.

For that post WWII era, why not try a uniform, always a smart and neat alternative? Be a WREN, land girl, police woman or nurse for the day!

Elegant and smartly-dressed ladies visiting the Goodwood Revival on the Saturday of the event stand a good chance of taking home flowers and bottles of champagne - traditionally the reserve of victorious racing drivers - as Goodwood have introduced motor sport's first, and only, Ladies Day. Throughout the day a leading team of fashion gurus look out for the most immaculately-groomed ladies in the crowds, and award spot prizes of finest Veuve Clicquot champagne and flowers to the lucky few

Getting the Look - Outfits for Gentelman

Outfits for the Gentlemen

A gentleman will always look debonair wearing a blazer, turn-up flannels, accompanied by a cravat, a Panama or Homburg hat and don't forget a touch of Brylcreem, of course. A rolled-up umbrella, cigarette holder or eye-glass will finish off a top-class and sophisticated look that even Cary Grant or Terry Thomas would admire.

A country gentleman might wear a sports jacket, trousers and braces, with check shirt, tweed hat or flat cap, and a woven tie. Accessories could include a pipe, binoculars in leather case and a shooting stick for that 'James Herriott' look.

Perhaps you might prefer a mechanic's white cloth overall (with charcoal for oil stains), leather boots, and accompanied by a flat cap, leather belt and clockwork stopwatches; alternatively, be a 'rebel' and dress as a Mod or Rocker!

A man in uniform is always a pleasant sight for the ladies, so why not wear an Army or RAF uniform from the period - in keeping with Goodwood's WW2 RAF history?
