A Legacy Lens on Configuring a Motorola RAZR with Google Calendar

NOTE: I no longer use a Motorola RAZR and, while I may occasionally post an update, I do not actively maintain this lens. I'm keeping it up as a legacy site. Given the number of visitors this lens continues to draw, it seems to still be useful to many people.

UPDATE: Google has released a program called "Google Calendar Sync" that will synchronize your primary Google calendar with your default MS Outlook calendar. If you use Outlook and sync your phone with Outlook, then this is a free way to keep everything in sync. It doesn't support synchronizing over the air. It doesn't support secondary calendars and it doesn't support all features, such as single-event privacy settings. For more information see this page: http://www.google.com/support/calendar/bin/answer.py?answer=89955

After many hours of searching on-line and testing various software, I came accross the GooSync Beta site (Note: Goosync is not longer in Beta).  My first attempt failed, and I thought I just made another failed attempt, but I finally figured it out.  I was so excited that I quickly set up this lens at 4:20 AM.  I couldn't wait to get this out to others who are feeling the frustration I felt.

By the way, this site runs on stars and cents.  If you enjoy the content, please rate this lens highly.  If you do not, please e-mail me with the reasons why, so that I can improve it.  Also, if you like any of the books or merchandise suggested her, please use the links from this lens to purchase them.

And if you look at this lens and think to yourself, "hey, I could do that!"  You're right, you can.  Why not sign up for Squidoo now.  Please use this link: http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/referral/ChouDoufu

Thank you for your support.

Setting Up Your Razr to Use GooSync

Step-by-step guide to configuring your Motorola Razr calendar to synchronize with Google Calendar using GooSync

  1. Go to Goosync's Website by clicking on this link and register a new account. Follow the instructions on GooSync's website. When you get to the page that states your phone doesn't support auto set-up, it will give you the settings you need. Save or print them.
  2. On your phone, from the main screen, press the menu button and select "Settings".
  3. In settings, select "Connection".
  4. Select "Sync" (NOT Bluetooth). Note to T-Mobile subscribers in the USA: It seems that all T-Mobile Razr V3s in the United States have the menu item for Sync setup turned off by default. You need to edit the SEEM to get it working so you can sync with Google. This link tells you how.
  5. Select "New Entry".
  6. For "Name", enter anything you want. I entered "Goosync".
  7. For "URL", enter the "www.goosync.com/sync/sync.aspx", but double-check the setting that you printed out in step 1, the URL may change. Note: attempting to navigate to this Web site in a web browser on your phone or computer will return an "invalid request" error.
  8. For "User Name", enter your GooSync user name--NOT your Google/Gmail user name.
  9. For "Password", enter your GooSync (NOT Google/Gmail) password.
  10. For "Data Paths" choose the "Change" soft-key. Leave "Phonebook" blank for now (although GooSync is working on an address book sync as well, it is not currently available). Highlight "Datebook" and choose the "Change" soft-key. Enter "Calendar".
  11. Select "Ok" and then "Done". You will see a "Changed" message.
  12. To synchronize your calendars, go to "Settings", "Connection", "Sync", highlight "GooSync" (or whatever you named it), and press the center navigation button (the circle with the dot).
  13. You may want to create a shortcut on your phone to make this easier for future syncs. To do this, go to "Settings", "Connection", "Sync", highlight "GooSync" and press and hold the menu button until you see the message "Assign Shortcut for: Goosync", select the "Yes" soft key.
  14. To synchronize your calendars using the shortcut, select the "Shortcuts" soft key from the main screen, highlight GooSync (you can press the number before the shortcut to jump to it) and then press the "Go To" soft key.
  15. After it finishes synchronizing your calendars, it will give you the message "Sync completed. View log." Select "Yes" or "No" using the hot keys.

Setting Up Your Razr to Use Schedule World

Step-by-step guide to configuring your Motorola Razr calendar to synchronize with Google Calendar using Schedule World

Schedule World Homepage: http://www.scheduleworld.com/

I just registered with Schedule World and am testing it. So far I'm impressed. It does not require that you give it your Google password, like GooSync, so it is more secure.

My test syncs have been successful and I was very happy to find out the recurring appointments synchronize properly. This alone may make me use SW instead of GooSync, at least until GooSync fixes this.

Multiple Calendars are supported to a point. Google imposes some limits on the number of events you can sync. Check out the SW support forum for more information on synchronizing multiple Google Calendars.

Although you can sync your phones contacts with your SW contacts and you can export your SW contacts to load into Google. There is currently no way to load exported Google contacts into SW (as of 11/17/2006).

The steps for setting up your Razr to sync with Google Calendar via ScheduleWorld are as follows:
  1. Go to http://www.scheduleworld.com/ and register.
  2. Go to the "Preferences" page in SW.
  3. Enter your Google user name for "Corresponding Google Calendar Username (email)"
  4. Click on the "Find Calendars" button and select the title of the Calendar you want to sync from the drop-down menu. "Google Calendar private XML URL" will be automatically populated after you select a calendar.
  5. Select one of the four Google sync modes. The default is "two way".
  6. To ensure that you phone is being synced with the most up-to-date version of your Google calendar, check the box next to: "Automatically sync with this Google Calendar at the start of a SyncML sync."
  7. On your phone, go to Settings-->Connections-->Sync-->New Entry. Use the settings provided by SW on the preference pages in the box titled: "Standard SyncML Client Configuration". Name the connection "SW" or "ScheduleWorld".
  8. # You may want to create a shortcut on your phone to make this easier for future syncs. To do this, go to "Settings", "Connection", "Sync", highlight "GooSync" and press and hold the menu button until you see the message "Assign Shortcut for: Goosync", select the "Yes" soft key.
To synchronize your calendars via SW using the shortcut, select the "Shortcuts" soft key from the main screen, highlight ScheduleWorld(you can press the number before the shortcut to jump to it) and then press the "Go To" soft key.

GCalSync

An Open Source Program to Synchronize your Phone's Calendar With Google

Homepage: http://www.gcalsync.com/

This is an open source program that you download to you phone and install. In theory, it should run on the Motorola Razr v3. But I have not been able to get it to work and it has been listed on the CGalSync Google Group "list of phones" page as unsupported. Click here for a discussion thread about the problem. Read another, more technical discussion thread here.

If anyone has successfully synchronized their Motorola Razr v3's calendar with Google calendar, please let me know and outline the steps involved.

Service Providers with "Sync"

Service providers whose Razr have the SyncML client available by default.

All of the Razr-Google sync solutions that I've gotten to work require the use of the Motorola Razr SyncML client. This is usually under "Settings"-->"Connections" and called "Sync" (NOT Bluetooth).

A visitor brought to my attention that in the T-Mobile turns off the menu item for "Sync" on its Razr phones sold in the United States.

So I threw together this list module to track those service providers whose Razr handset's default settings include the SyncML client

Please e-mail me if you have a service provider not listed below or in a country not listed below and let me know if your Razr has the "Sync" settings available.
  • UNITED STATES

    1. T-Mobile: NO. You need to edit the SEEM to get it working so you can sync with Google. This link tells you how.

    2. Cingular: YES

  • TAIWAN

    1. Chunghwa Telecom: YES

Thank you for this post. It was hugely helpful in getting GooSync set up with my Razr.

One thing to be careful of -- when I was setting it up, I typed in http://sync.google.com/ instead of http://sync.goosync.com/ because I'm so used to typing Google. I kept getting an error message and it took me a minute to figure out what I'd done wrong.

Thanks again.

Great, and informative lens, I have been using a Motorola and never knew what it is that I could do all of this with the help of Google. Motorola is one of the best phones available in the market now after a long Software Functional Testing procedure that they have followed to improve their product.
