My first True Gothic Painting... A Work In Progress

I haven't really done any gothic art and I love it sooooo i thought i would start one.
As you can see from the image, it was going to be a black and white artwork done in water soluble pencils.
I decided to change it and create it using oils as i have not used oils for a while and really missed the smell of it!
I will add more here later once i have taken more photos

A bigger view

this shows more of the surroundings...part of the backgrounds, you can see that i got part of the way through before deciding it would be done in oils

Main view of entire work

as you can see that it is a lot longer than the width.

Let's add a splash of colour!

Ok...so here are some more images with the addition of colours, mostly just blocking in base colours and also trying to deepen the shadows.

Colour so far with all of art in view

Ok, well i really think that the background could be a little lighter perhaps, but i have just put in some colour with a basis colour idea in mind, will elaborate on this as I go along

Still quite aways to go...

I think i am happy with the progress so far, too used to using other mediums and forgot how lovely it is to work in oils.
I think my next step will be to work on the celtic head stone behind my subject, that way i can get some sort of an idea as to where to lighten and darken other areas.
Also need to block the trees in too.
This artwork has a very cool feel to it, i want to have it seem as though she is in moonlight, hope i have at least achieved this!

Let's block in the background

I am starting to add to the background

Ok this is a full view of the painting so far, i have taken this picture inside so the quality could be a little better.
As you can see i have blocked in the basic shape of the trees and also blocked in the head stone behind the subject.

Let's now add a little more detail...not too much

As you can see I have added more colours

Ok so I have added some more here as you can see, noting is finished yet as I don't like to concentrate too much on one area or it can tend to look separate from the rest of the painting.
I have added detail to the tombstone and also lightened it.
Colour has also been added to her lips and roses in her hair.
I have added some folds with light and darks into her dress, some shadows will need to be deepened and i need to add high lights too, this will be done towards the end of the artwork.

Close up of her face

a little bit of a closer view.

I think this artwork is really coming along well, i will start on some more details to the background so I can push the focal point out further, some sillouetted head stones in the background, a little more detail in the trees too with the addition of deeper shadows too.

Gothikka - My First Gothic Artwork - Complete

Cose up of the finished artwork

Well here it is, a close up of the finished product, ready for you to take a look at, as you can see by the original monochrome drawing, her face changed a little, i guess it is hard to get the exact look as the drawing when you add paint onto it.

Close up of Gothikka - Another View

Here is another view, very hard to get a decent photo of this as it was too big for my scanner, indoors makes it a little grainy and outside washed the colour out.

Gothikka - What a great journey!

A hugely enjoyable subject i may do more of ...

I must admit that I did really enjoy this artwork, happy to get back into oils after quite a time.
I love the way her hair turned out, it is very difficult to paint (well me anyway) black hair while still trying to show the volume and curl in it, i hope they do in fact look like large barrel curls in her hair ;)
The roses were fun also.

GOTHIKKA COMPLETE VIEW!

Here it is a look at ALL of this

Well here is the complete view of this artwork, I really hope you enjoyed watching the process of this wonderful artwork.
I do plan to create WIP out of most of my artworks as it is very fun to do.
Just don't expect some words of wisdom as far as technique is concerned ;) I am certainly 'winging' it here!
Stay tuned for more of my WIP's.

The final size of this is:
16.6cm x 42.3cm or 6.5 " x 16.6"

please come and take a look as this will be available for sale on:

I would love to read your comments on this WIP

It is always good to find out what people like or maybe don't like about my art

Even though I am an adult I do still find a lot of wonder and magic in the world of Fantasy...I do like the idea of trolls under bridges, dragon caves... (more)
