Designing a Gothic Garden

Designing a Gothic garden is fun and the interpretations are seemingly endless.

A traditional Gothic garden is actually very similar to a Victorian garden with such an abundance of different types of flowers and garden statuary, it appears to be overstuffed.

A dark Gothic garden would contain mostly twisted trees, vining plants, and black, or almost black (deep, deep purple) flowers. It might also contain night blooming or night scented flowers.

Gothic gardens can also take on a spooky look, again, using twisted-weeping trees, vines, witchy herbs, night blooming flowers, gargoyle and dragon statuary, and to enliven the almost creepy look after dark, white flowers that seem to glow in the dark.

Your own Gothic garden can be any combination of the above and still look great.

Use plants, trees, flowers, herbs, and shrubbery that you love and watch it all come together!

No Gothic Garden can be considered complete without a glorious selection of useful and scentsational garden herbs.

My choices would include Rosemary, thyme, sage, musky scented basil, coriander, parsley, dill, and several different varieties of scented geraniums but there is absolutely no hard and fast rules here. Simply choose your favorites and add them to the earth and in urns around your garden.

Be sure to keep some near the walkway so you'll be sure to brush up against them as you admire your handiwork.

Decorating a Gothic Garden - Gazing Balls

Gazing balls are an important element in a Gothic garden. These beautiful orbs add a bit of mystique and fun to your landscape.

Gazing balls date back to Victorian times and allow the viewer to see 360 degrees around the garden and landscape.

Choosing a silver gazing ball that resembles a crystal ball is fun but there are many, many different designs to choose from.

Don't forget to add a stand for the best viewing pleasure.

Once you've added one gazing ball to your yard, I guarantee that you will want to include many more. For some reason these tame little cuties are highly addicting.

Bats in a Gothic Garden

I love watching the bats at dusk as they float across the skyline. Keeping a bat house in your Gothic garden will ensure you of having plenty of bats to watch but did you know that these wonderful creatures eat tons and tons of mosquitoes making your garden a bit more comfortable to sit in.
