Get Grants and Scholarships for your Childs College Education

Each year, billions of dollars are made available to college students in the form of financial aid. Grants and scholarships, sometimes referred as gift assistance, do not have to be repaid. Student loans however must be repaid. Generally these loans feature favorable rates of interest and/or deferred payment options.

Just wanted to add that you should definitely look at local businesses. Call then and ask them if they are given out scholarship and if so how to apply for one. The bigger the business the more likely they will be funding scholarships. It never hurts to ask.

Check into Residence Hall Counselor Scholarship

Many colleges with on-campus housing need students to serve as counselors for their residence halls, in return for a scholarship that is sometimes worth as much as the value of room and board. Most often, colleges do not announce the availability of these scholarships publicly, so you may have to approach people who are in-charge of on-campus residences and dormitories. Generally, Residence hall Counselors are chosen based on personal character and leadership rather than grades.

Consider Attending a College in an Area Where The Cost of Living is Lower

Tuition is only one component of the Cost of Attendance. Other major costs include food and rent - both of which are affected by the local cost of living. For instance, a hamburger at a fast food chain in Boston, MA might cost $1.79 whereas the same hamburger might cost a little less in Ohio. Rent can also vary from dity to city. In fact you can save hundreds or thousands of dollars per year by attending a college in an area where the cost of living is lower.

If You Are a Woman, Consider a Non-Traditional Career

There are many scholarships designed to bring more women into the force in areas such as science and engineering, where women have traditionally been underrepresented. For example:

1. The American Council of Independent Laboratories, Inc. provides scholarships to women who begin majors in physics, chemistry, engineering. geology, and biology at the University of New Mexico.

2. The Esther Carter Ogle Memorial Scholarship is awarded to firs year women mathematics majors at Fort Hays State University.

3. Purdue University offers the Carol A. Thiele Scholarship for female students who intend careers related to agriculture.

4. The Society of Women Engineers offers Bertha Lamme Westinghouse Scholarships to first year women majoring in engineering.

5. The Zonta International Foundation awards dozens of $6000 Amelia Earhart Fellowships annually to women who wish to pursue graduate work in aerospace sciences.
6. The national Physical Science Consortium offers up to $15,000 Graduate Fellowships for Minorities and Women in the Physical Sciences.

7. The Landscape Architecture Foundation provides Harriett Barnhart Wimmer Scholarships to female undergraduates in their last year of studying landscape architecture.

Powerful Cash for College Tips

To be considered for federal financial aid for college, you must submit a FAFSA form.

Even if you think will not be eligible for federal financial aid, submit a FAFSA anyway. This is important for four reasons.
1. You might be pleasantly surprised. Many middle-class people are eligible for federal financial aid.
2. Even if you do not qualify for federal loans with deferred-payment options, you might still qualify for loans with favorable interest rates.
3. Submitting a FAFSA is often a prerequisite for many non-federal financial aid programs.
4. Being rejected for financial aid from the government is sometimes a pre-condition for private sector awards.
