I love meeting young drummers because they always ask me who my favorite drummer is, expecting one of the "recognized greats" as my response. Sure, there's Buddy Rich, Gene Krupa, Philly Joe Jones, Max Roach, or any number of great jazz drummers out there; but I can tell how serious a student of jazz the questioner is but their reaction to my favorite jazz drummer of all time: Grady Tate.
Don't know who he is? Shame on you. Wander through the Grady Tate lens, and learn.
