Certifying to Become an In Home Day Care Provider

To this day I have yet to find (maybe not looking hard enough) lenses, or blogs about Grandmothers like me. I do not work out of the home, but I do work all day every day. I take care of my 5 month old grandson and have been doing it since he was 6 weeks old.

Now I have decided to start this page giving out information and links and dare I say it advice on how to do all of this. First I am a wife, a mother, then grandmother. So I have at this time about 5 or 6 careers going on here.

Since I wrote the first paragraph, I decided to check it out. Been reading and meeting a lot of nice grandparents.

Still have not met one who does what I do. By that I mean take care of the grandbaby and try to build an income on line.

I think I better clarify this part. Most of this information for certification will pertain to the State of Louisiana. This is the state we live in.

The image I have showing here is of the first page of the Child Care Certification Program, provided by the Volunteers of America in Baton Rouge, LA.

Child Care Certification

Getting Certified to be Paid

To be paid by the Louisiana Dept. of Family Services for childcare you give, you have to be certified by the State. The Volunteers of America offer the certification course.

Just for the general principle of the thing and to update my child rearing skills, I will be taking this course during the month of January.

More later on other services available to Grandmothers who take care of their grandchildren. I have been on the website of the VOA. Very interesting.

Becoming an in Home Child Care Provider in Louisiana

What It Takes

Becoming an in home child care provider takes a few steps.
First you have to apply. That means going to your local Social Services offices and filling out an application. Then an appointment is made. Application fees are paid with a money order or a cashiers check.

Then an in depth background check is done. That will take some time.

Lessons learned over the years raising your own children, do not always add up.
My daughter wants me to get paid for taking care of my grandson. So I checked into it, and I have to take a 6 hour certification course. Then I shall be considered to be fit to care for my grandchild.

Classes

Learning

I have taken two classes so far.
They are very interesting. A lot of give and take with instructors and class participants.

The first class I took was called: Common Objects, Fun Toys.

It is something, what you can teach a child or the fun a child can have with simple objects such as plastic bottles, coasters, boxes with lids. Look around your home and kitchen for objects that could become a learning or fun toy that a small child will like. So many things can take the place of toys that you can buy.

For some people, the high priced toys are out of reach. You can use common objects in your home.

My second class was on For the Love of Money.
In this class we discussed budgeting. Child care providers, even in their home, really need to learn to budget.

You should never spend your family budget money on supplies and food needed for the child care.

Purpose of the Grandparent Project

"The mission of the Grandparent Project is to develop ideas, and to create resources and content for grandparents to help them better enjoy their special relationship with each grandchild. This Grandparent Project website is a tool to create and manage all of the components of a free internet based service for grandparents and their grandchildren. It's an online area to manage the development of the project: ideas, plans, structure, phases of the project, etc. It also provides a place to collaborate with other grandparents on the book we are writing."
