Great American Pie Month

February is Great American Pie Month. I don't know who started the celebration, but I am glad they did. Pie is a favorite not only to Americans but to many people all over the world.
Take a look at not only the wonderful recipes, but also the interesting facts on pies that you may not know of. Fill someone with joy making them a pie as we celebrate this month of American Pies.
There are many recipes that have been given down from generation to generation that have kept the homemade versions alive. Pie is a wonderful treat to have whether you are out at a restaurant and a after dinner dessert to making and baking it for your family to eat.
There are all different kinds of pies. From nice pies baked in the oven (apple, cherry, pumpkin) to cold pies (lemon, key lime, pudding) you can enjoy pies through out the year.

Interesting facts about pie 

-There was a survey by the American Pie Council and Crisco® that found apple pie was a favorite flavor among one out of four Americans.

-The average American eats six slices of pie per year.

-The term "as American as apple pie" traces back to 14th century England.

- Fruit pies were commonly eaten as part of breakfast in the 19th century.

-Pies are known for other names such as: pastie, oggie, piraski, piragie, patty and pierogi. More common names include: streusel, tart, turnover and crumble.

-The American Pie Council is an organization has is committed to preserving America's pie heritage and promoting Americans' love of pie.

-In the 19th century, apple and other fruit pies were a fairly common breakfast item. Fruit pie was considered part of a good hearty meal before a hard day's work.

Nothing but the basic Good ole Apple Pie 

CRUST:
2 1/2 cups white flour
2 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup cold butter, broken into small pieces
5 tbsp. cold vegetable shortening
8 tbsp. ice water

FILLING
1/3 to 2/3 cup sugar
1/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
Pinch of salt
8 medium sized apples (a medium apple = about 1 cup)
2 tablespoons margarine

Another Original:Pecan Pie 

* 3 eggs
* 2/3 cup sugar
* 1 cup dark corn syrup
* 1/2 tsp salt

* 1/3 cup butter, melted
* 1 tsp vanilla
* 1 cup pecan halves
* 9-inch pie crust

Cherry Pie Recipe 

Ingredients:

1 cup sugar (1 1/4 cup if using sour cherries)
4 cups fresh pitted cheries
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 cup flour
pastry for a double crust pie

Pumpkin Pie 

Ingredients:

2 cups pumpkin (canned or puree)
2 eggs
1 1/4 cups half and half (whole milk can be substituted)
2/3 cup brown sugar
pinch salt
2 Tablespoons butter, melted
1 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
9 inch pie crust (from scratch or Pillsbury)

Sweet Potato Pie 

Ingredients:

1/4 cup butter, softened
2 eggs, separated
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups cooked mashed sweet potatoes
1 tsp. vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ginger
1 unbaked 9-inch pie crust
