Clean Up Your Computing

The standard 200W PC running for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week, 50 weeks in a year, will use 400 kwh. Maybe not much considering the total energy usage of your household or business, but it's a great place to start cutting your carbon emissions and saving money!

In comparison, the new breed of Green-PC's use an average of 30w, so in comparison to above it would only use 60 kwh. An energy saving of 85%!

Next time you're looking at upgrading your current PC, consider the Eco-Friendly Option. It may mean a slight increase in outlay, but this will be recouped by the saving on your electricity bill!

The Eco-Button

Ideal for those not willing or able to upgrade to a new pc, but still keen to save money and cut carbon emissions.
This fairly simple and cheap device relies on a little bit of software and a small button attached by cable to a USB port on your PC. When pressed, this quickly sends your pc into a deep-sleep mode, much faster than any other method of sending it into standby. Whilst using less power than it would on standby it is also instantly restores at a touch of of your keyboard, the computer instantly returns to where you left off and displays a splash screen showing savings of both money and carbon.
Also, it's much faster than navigating through your start menu, so it's more likely that you'll actually use it.
You can find the eco-button for sale at
Nigel's Eco Store

Some older computers and some HP computers may have difficulty in reactivation. This is a problem with the computer bios and not the software. It will work with all OS's, Vista, XP, windows 2000 & laptops.

What Do You Think Of Green Computing?

Nice work on an important topic. I just wrote about energy efficient computer power supplies a little while ago at http://greenchemistry.wordpress.com/2008/04/10/corsair-gets-80-plus-certification-for-all-its-pc-power-suppleis-to-meet-epa-energystar-50-standards/

Also, the new Intel Wolfdale chips, based of 45 nm technology, use much less energy than the "older" Core2Duo chips (the "old" chips are only about 18months old, it seems). See http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/Wolfdale/

Thanks for joining my sustainability group!

Best wishes, Jim

Good info here. I didn't know about the Eco-Button, so you taught me something today. What many of us don't realize is how much each of our contributions have to do with global warming. By making consistent changes to greener and more sustainable practices in our daily lives, each one of us becomes more and more a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. Welcome to the Building Ordinary group.
