Im what most would consider a 'hardcore' computer gamer, I need great performance but im still very concerned with emmissions, so for my latest computer upgrade i used power saving products! Im saving tonnes of money & helping the environment.

Glad to see others share my views. Great lens.

Great ideas! Another simple thing people can do is simply turn off their monitor instead of using a screen saver or use an energy saving script like the one from localcooling.com. And webmasters can switch to green web hosting providers.

    Hi Paul,
Unless a server can be woken from 'sleep' mode via an external command it's unlikely that an eco-button would suit this purpose. You would be better to explore the options of a 'green server' similair to the Janus Green Server listed above form VeryPC.
  • paulbarton Nov 18, 2008 @ 2:30 pm | delete
I've been wondering how to reduce the amount of electricity my pc uses - will a green button work on a server so that it will wake on a demand from an external networked PC? Great Lens given it a deserved ***** and added it to my favourites

This is a bless-worthy lens if I've ever seen one! Super job! :)
  • sisterra Nov 14, 2008 @ 8:09 pm | delete
Excellent lens - I purchased a smart strip outlet plug - once the computer is off, it cuts the electricity to everything else I have plugged onto the strip.

  • chemrat Apr 23, 2008 @ 3:53 am | delete
Nice work on an important topic. I just wrote about energy efficient computer power supplies a little while ago at http://greenchemistry.wordpress.com/2008/04/10/corsair-gets-80-plus-certification-for-all-its-pc-power-suppleis-to-meet-epa-energystar-50-standards/

Also, the new Intel Wolfdale chips, based of 45 nm technology, use much less energy than the "older" Core2Duo chips (the "old" chips are only about 18months old, it seems). See http://www.hothardware.com/Articles/Wolfdale/

Thanks for joining my sustainability group!

    Best wishes, Jim

Good info here. I didn't know about the Eco-Button, so you taught me something today. What many of us don't realize is how much each of our contributions have to do with global warming. By making consistent changes to greener and more sustainable practices in our daily lives, each one of us becomes more and more a part of the solution rather than a part of the problem. Welcome to the Building Ordinary group.
