Yes, You Can Make Your Own Baby Food. Simple. Fast.

You do not require extensive training as a cook in order to make your own baby food. It is simple to do, will provide you the ability to control what your child is eating and will also save you a lot of money.

So, got some green beans? You certainly do not have to use fresh green beans but they are the best. When fresh isn't available or too costly in your region, frozen is preferable in my opinion to canned. The process is similar though it will not take as long for frozen and even less for canned.

So, got some green beans? Great! Just prep, cook, mush and serve! Yes, it is that simple!

First son experiences...

Well, with my first son I didn't get any tips from my son's health care provider...not that I asked. Maybe I was a little embarrased to suggest to his doctor that I didn't know what to feed my son. Nevertheless I found some online resources and winged it. I chose to start with the 'green' vegetables...green beans, spinach... after reading a few opinions that the 'yellow' vegetables..squash, carrots...are sweeter and may sensitize babies tastes preferentially towards those sweeter vegetables.1 point

Does Your Baby Already Have a Favorite Food?

My son Gavin (almost 9 months) LOVES bananas and can easily eat an entire banana after he has had his vegetables for lunch or dinner.

So, Got Some Green Beans?

Fresh ones?

Don't be shy about buying fresh green beans. They are tasty and fresh is always better. You'll want to get a good handful of fresh beans (check out the bulk green beens bin) to start out with. After you make your first batch, you can judge if want to buy more or less the next time around.

Prep time! No worries. It isn't too bad. I just wash the bean thoroughly in a collander and then snap of the ends. That's it.

Steamers on Amazon

Steaming is my preferred method of cooking and not just for making baby food. I use my steamer for everything from making white rice to cooking shrimp. Cooking doesn't have to be complicated...and there are kitchen gadgets and appliances that can make the process even easier!

Got Some Green Beans? Time to Cook 'Em

Simple! Really! Just toss your prepped green beans in to the steamer bowl and set for about 15 or so minutes. When the timer dings...CAREFULLY...remove the lids from the steamer and check to see if the beans are fork tender (easily mush when pressed against the side of the steamer bowl). If they are...GREAT! If not, add 5-10 more minutes and recheck.

Kitchen Aid Immersion Blender

The King of Hand Blenders

KitchenAid KHB300OB Hand Blender, Onyx Black

Amazon Price: $99.95 (as of 01/01/2010)Buy Now

Okay...you don't really need this really cool immersion blender to make your own baby food but it makes the job a lot easier and if your like me (LOVES kitchen gadgets) it will make your time in the kitchen all that more enjoyable!!! Plus there are tons of other unrelated to baby food. This baby whips, chops nuts...sorry it doesn't do dishes...but it cleans up in a snap!!

Time to Mush (yes, puree)

My favorite part....the mushin' step...oh yeah and I get to use another kitchen gadget. I chose my immersion blender but you certainly could use your food mill or blender. So, go mush!

If you have made sweet potatoes or apples you'll see that green beans have a bit of a different texture even when mushed. No worries! They will eat it. Younger babies might do better if you mix the green bean puree with some rice cereal and dilute a bit with water, breast milk or formula. Older babies will chow it down without a second thought.

Oxo Spatula

Oxo Good Grips Medium Silicone Spatula, Blueberry

Amazon Price: $7.99 (as of 01/01/2010)Buy Now

No, you don't need a fancy (really cool) spatula to make baby food with but it certainly makes the job easier...and it gets every last bit out of the 'mush' bowl so none of your hard work (not really that hard) is wasted! I switched to silicone spatulas a couple of years ago. I love the oxo brand silicone spatulas because of the very comfortable grip and since they are silicone I am no longer melting them when I leave them in a pan!!!
