What is leather and vinyl protection and why do I need it for my car?
Leather / vinyl protection is an invisible, breathable, coating that penetrates, conditions and protects leather and vinyl surfaces. Treated surfaces are resistant to ultraviolet color fading, cracking, moisture absorption, mildew and retains the interior's beauty. Leather /vinyl treated with high quality, professional grade leather protection gives the vehicle owner time to clean up spills before they can become permanent stains or deteriorate the texture of the surface.
Leather and vinyl protection is a valuable investment that no car owner should do without; especially in today's world. People are spending more time in their vehicles, therefore the vehicle becomes dirtier, is more vulnerable to spills and the measure of wear and tear will be greater. Leather / vinyl protection prevents premature aging and inhibits the penetration of spills such as coffee, pop, water, tea, milk and juices without affecting the natural appearance or texture .Leather protection helps to maintain the vehicle's appearance and aids in the resale value. An unprotected car interior will deteriorate quicker, be reduced in value, could lead to costly repairs and requires more frequent and thorough cleanings.
Why is it called leather and vinyl protection ?
Arent leather and vinyl two different materials so how can one product treat both?
Top coated leather should never be treated with products made exclusively for leather because the oils found in all leather cleaning and conditioning products can not penetrate the top coating of vinyl and cause erosion to the surface. Oil will strip the plastic, UV and wax coatings added by the manufacturer to protect the surface.
Some car manufacturers still use 100% real leather but it is rare these days. Dyed leather is porous, drys out and fades easily. Dyed leathers require special care because heavy cleaners and water can remove the dye and natural oils. Special leather cleaning products must be used frequently to clean, feed, prevent cracking and fading.
If you're unsure if your car has dyed leather or vinyl coated, check with your car dealer, manufacturer or a professional automotive detailer.
DIY Leather / Vinyl Protection VS Professional Application
Can I buy a retail product and protect my leather myself or should I get it professionally applied?
To date there are no retail products on the market that equal that of a professional grade leather / vinyl protection. Retail grade products are nothing more than temporary dressings. Products found on store shelves shouldn't be confused with permanent protection. In addition, these products may in fact harm your leather and vinyl interiors because they do not allow the materials to breathe, have harmful silicones and can build up causing a milk white film. Overtime these products will create permanent damage to the surfaces including loss of texture, cracking, fading and deterioration. Most importantly, they do not protect from spills and stains.
Purchasing a leather / vinyl protection package
What types of businesses offer leather / vinyl protection packages for my car?
It must be noted that when you purchase any upgrade for your car whether it is accessories, window tint, paint, fabric, leather or vinyl protection you will be subject to a mark-up. Car dealers make large profits from these added services because they charge more than what the regular price would have been from the window tinter, automotive detailing shop, stereo shop....
Typically speaking the best applications, product and prices come from auto detail shops. It should be noted that this is where most car dealerships send the car for these services. Very few dealerships actually perform the work in-house.
When searching for automotive detailing shops who offer any kind of vehicle protection do your research to find out which ones are reputable. Most protection systems like paint, fabric, vinyl and leather are invisible this means that until something happens to that surface you won't know if it is there or not. It is sad to say but like every other business there are a few scam artists in the car detailing business too. Some lack the knowledge or training to properly clean the surface and apply the product correctly. Others have been known to take the clients money and never apply the product at all and then there are those who sell vinyl, leather protection but do nothing more than apply vinyl dressing.
