Guide to Avatar
Ranked #5,419 in Entertainment, #67,046 overall
Avatar
First rumors of the film were around August 8th, 1996 and it spent a lot of time in what industry people term "development hell".
Number one at the box office seven weekends in a row including opening. That's #1 for 7!
A sequel is in the works and Sigourney Weaver has seen a script, but filming has been delayed two years.

What could they possibly have in common?
(Avatar)
To this very day, Christian missionaries (mostly Protestant) are giving Amazon tribes a hard time. This means up to and including kidnapping their children and holding them hostage so that parents will agree to let them be taught the Gospel to get them back. And meanwhile the Brazilian government lets white settlers steal their land, logging companies burn down the forest, oil companies and hydroelectric projects kill Amazonians. They kill with rifles and sometimes with flooding. What's this got to do with Avatar? Can you say genocide?
China pulls the movie from theatres. You can guess why. They won't let any minority that is being wiped out speak. If this lens (and all my other lenses go down) then you know for a fact that they got to me. [And if you let them get away with it, then you deserve what happens to you.]
Conservatives in the USA say that the movie criticizes US foreign policy. As if that were a bad thing. American voters (Democrat, Republican, Independent, Green and Libertarian) keep voting for peace and president-elects get into office and turn from being peace candidates into war presidents. Why? The foreign policy mafia. War is a sacred cow. God forbid we cut the defense budget and let the FBI hunt down terrorists instead of the military.
So what do Christians, Communists, Capitalists, and Conservatives have in common besides all beginning with the letter C?
James Cameron says he doesn't know what the critics are talking about. He's a Canadian.

Editor's note -- RIght out of the gate, GWTW trounces Avatar. And no modern movie will ever catch up with hits of the past because people don't go to movie theaters anymore in droves. They wait for it on cable and they wait for it to come out on Blu-Ray. And Cameron has a habit of rushing his films with bad deal. Titanic was sold to NBC for a pittance and Avatar was on DVD years before it should have (if ever). He got in cash squeeze in making Titanic and took the first offer. He had no such excuse with Avatar. He really should talk with the Disney marketing people. Editor's Note -- Incredible but there are still morons (excuse me, foolish people) who still don't know that:
1. Star Wars was fantasy not science fiction
2. It is your loss and no one's gain to avoid all science fiction films because you are dumb enough to believe that Star Wars was sci-fi
3. You don't have to see Avatar or Gone With The Wind or Star Wars or Titanic or any movie. That's not the issue. The issue is how best to enjoy a movie when you see it.
How best to enjoy them?
GWTW -- Be cognizant of slavery like any modern civilized person but don't emotionally invest in the Confederacy any more than Rhett and Scarlett did. Miss O'Hara thought the war ruined the social season and Captain Butler did not fight -- he was a blockade runner for war profits not loyalty to a Lost Cause.
Star Wars -- leave your brain at home because spaceships don't make sound in the vacuum of space and you don't have magic and swords in SF. These are elements of fantasy. Enjoy it on a child's level because there is nothing to appeal to your adult brain.
Titanic -- enjoy it as a somewhat faithful to history drama not a documentary. As Cameron himself said, he wanted people to feel for the lost lives not do a documentary.
Avatar -- Enjoy the first effective use of 3D, the enthusiasm and as the first environmental movie.
In a country whose government has made being an environmentalist tantamount to being a terrorist under The Reign of Terror of the Patriot Act (nullified the Bill of Rights), as a pro-Earth person I hope the movie and its sequels make ten or even twenty billion to hammer the message into those bureaucrats' heads that we the people don't like war, don't like air pollution and don't like water pollution. And we could do without oil, coal and fission while we are on the subject. Avatar 3, Battle Angel Alita - James Cameron: Beyond The Trailer
Here is why this is a truly ghastly idea:
1. It is hentai in the carnographic sense more than the pornographic sense - though that too.
2. It caters to abuse of women in the same way that the Krafft-Ebing posters of the Sarah Connor Chronicles caters to creeps who like to cut up women. [Richard von Krafft-Ebing was an Austro-German psychiatrist who was the author of the seminal work Psychopathia Sexualis.]
3. Would God really use mechanical (or for that matter biological) angels when the Bible clearly says that His angels are spiritual beings?
4. The Bible says that not a sparrow falls without God noticing. Angels have not been allowed to roam loose on Earth since the Book of Genesis without supervision. So would God allow one of His angels to end up dead in a garbage dump? I don't think so.
5. It is not science fiction. It is fantasy. I get that. But even fantasy does not get to insult our intelligence. Mr. Cameron has said that Avatar is a warm-up for Battle Angel. Really? Is he really going to spend a couple hundred million on hentai? He is a great director but I'm not watching Battle Angel not even on a used DVD or syndicated on late night TV.
Changing the subject from Battle Angel and Avatar, if Cameron likes this kind of material, then perhaps he should have been actively involved in the Sarah Connor Chronicles. That had a cyborg woman too. However, that other Cameron (played by Summer Glau) did not get chopped up too badly. Thank God!
Mister Cameron, stick to uplifting stuff like The Abyss and Avatar. And when you do a period piece like Titanic, less spitting of saliva and phlegm please.
postscript -- For those needing more proof of my thesis that Battle Angel-type material is insidious, do the following. Go to Google Images and type in keywords like gynoid and female android and fembot. Wander around to where the links take you. There are whole sites devoted to this. Perverts won't see anything wrong. Civilized people will need a strong stomach not to hurl from what they see..

Script is being written. James Cameron plans to film both Avatar sequels concurrently.
Also known as "Isikunijimas 3" in Lithuania.
Release now moved to December 2017.
Production was supposed to start later this year (2012). It still hasn't started. The first sign that the sequels might take more time than originally planned arrived last June when Cameron revealed that Avatar 2 and 3 were still in the script phase.
Expect Avatar 3 a year after 2, as the performance capture and cinematography would take place back-to-back with the second film."

Editor' note -- new release date since this article - How can you write a script for Avatar 3 when you don't know the full story of Avatar 2 ?
- Editor's note - I am not sure why there is a discussion board for this topic. As a writer myself, I can tell you that James Cameron, like any writer, can write the end before finishing the middle. Can, but most writers choose to write from beginning to end without skipping over. I doubt if James Cameron has written a complete script for Avatar 3 (possible but unlikely). More likely, he has notes or synopsis or treatment or incomplete screenplay so that his staff and producers and crew can at least start their own planning and research. If there is any truth to this at all, the studio may have arm-twisted Mr. Cameron into taking this step because:
1. They remember the delays on Titanic and the huge budget over-runs made it the most expensive movie ever - up to that point in time. Will it be a flop? Will the money invested in the sequel go down the drain and kill the third movie?
2. They just announced a two year delay in the timetable and studio executives have to wonder if fan enthusiasm will have evaporated by then.
3. Studio executives also have to wonder if the cast will be available - or even still alive when cameras are ready to roll. They are bean counters and they have got to be sweating bullets. - Board: Avatar 3

Editor's note - Nigeria? Scam. It is true that Nigeria has a film industry so large that they call it Nollywood but James Cameron has not even hinted at a fourth movie. And as to what this person means by "buy one," that could be anything from a ticket to a Blu-Ray to a video game version of the movie. I did confirm however that they are taking about James Cameron's Avatar and not The Last Airbender.

- Case Study: Amazon Rainforest
Tropical forests are being destroyed at an ever-increasing rate. Estimates of the extent and rate of loss vary, but it appears that nearly half of the world's tropical forests already have been lost, and the remainder will all but disappear in the next two to three decades. The loss is incalculable. These forests provide habitat for an estimated half of the world's plant and animal species, provide water and fuel for much of the world's population, and influence regional and global climate. Commercial logging, clearance for agriculture, ranching, and fuel gathering are all responsible for the destruction. Solutions include the development of alternative fuelwood supplies through fuelwood plantations, the regulation of logging, and a consensus as to the value of forest conservation over commercial development. - The Causes of Tropical Deforestation | Ecology and Environment

Was Terra Nova based on Avatar?

Spielberg is obviously cashing in on the idea of a primitive world, in this case the Earth of the past 85 million years ago, mining company exploiters (Massey Energy one presumes*), and overbearing military. In Avatar, the military is killing indigenous people. In Terra Nova, the military is the government. In a recent episode, the villains in the world of 2149 sent back an army because the people were not oppressed enough. So the people sent a dinosaur to the future in revenge.
Stephen Lang is in both productions as the villain in Avatar and the hero in Terra Nova. On balance while similar, I'd say no plagiarism. Humans did not evolve until millions of years after the last big dinosaur fell into the La Brea tar pits.
*And no I don't worry about this criminal corporation suing me because they are in violation of local, county, state and federal laws -- I would simply cooperate with prosecutors trying to nail their executives. Maybe I would even give the prosecutors additional evidence.
Is "Avatar" based on a book?
No. Avatar is based on an original screenplay penned by writer/director/producer James Cameron. However, the screenplay does contain elements and concepts from several science fiction works, including The Jesus Incident (1979) by Frank Herbert and Bill Ransom, Speaker For The Dead by Orson Scott Card, and Winds of Altair by Ben Bova. Poul Anderson's 1957 novella Call Me Joe tells the story of a paraplegic who telepathically connects with an artificial being on a harsh alien planet. As he spends more time in the artificial body he begins to prefer that life to his own. Avatar tells pretty much the exact same basic plot, which has led to the accusations. Harry Harrison's Deathworld is a planet called Pyrrus. It is a mining colony. The colonists are under constant and deadly assault by all of the planet's indigenous life forms. Their sole remaining base is an enclosure surrounded by a wall/fence, with observation towers spaced along it regularly. The landing pad for spaceships is contained within this perimeter. Only the really, really fast and smart survive there. Introduced into the colony is our hero Jason Dinalt, a thief and smuggler, who is recruited to help the Pyrrans obtain advanced weaponry which will help them in their struggle. It is only when the non-Pyrran (Jason) is introduced into the colony and brings his non-Pyrran experiences to bear on the colony's plight that we learn the true nature of the colonist's problems and find a solution to their dilemma. Okay it is a clichƩd plot.I myself as a child wrote a complex story about natives on another world being invaded. The twist was that, for a change, humans were the villains. In fact, in my story, humans had no redeeming qualities whatsoever. I hired artists to illustrate storyboards because I wanted to make an epic movie quadrilogy. I should have copyrighted and trademarked because this was long before James Cameron ever went to work as an apprentice at Roger Corman's New World Studios. James Cameron was still a truck driver when I was laying out plot lines and characterizations and descriptions of alien fauna and flora. So when I finally saw Avatar for the first time (one of the last people on Earth to see it on the big screen) in a 3-D IMAX theater the week before the last run, I thought someone had broken into my house and stolen my ideas. Of course my story was and perhaps still is unfilmable - my natives are completely naked. No loincloths. And my natives are human in appearance not blue giants with pointy ears. There are about a hundred other differences but I'll keep those differences to myself in the event I get a serious offer.
Is it based on Pocahontas?
No, Pocahontas was "red" not blue and the white guy in Pocahontas was not only not sympathetic to Native Americans but white people eventually killed all the American Indians in the area.
Is Avatar based on the Nickelodeon cartoon series?
Is James Cameron's movie 'Avatar' related to Julia Cameron's book 'The Artist's Way'?
The stories are not related in any way, nor are James and Julia Cameron related.
Is it based on K.R.Z. 2068 by Eric Ryder ?

David Wharton of Cinema Blend: "Eric Ryder has filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court claiming that while employed by Lightstorm back in 1999 he wrote a story that became the basis for Avatar. Called K.R.Z. 2068, Ryder says the story was developed as a planned movie by Lightstorm, but was eventually abandoned in 2002 because the company didn't think there would be enough interest in the film. Ryder also claims to have created supporting materials such as treatments and photos.
So what was K.R.Z. 2068 all about? Ryder's story was an "environmentally-themed 3D epic about a corporation's colonization and plundering of a distant moon's lush and wondrous natural setting." The complaint also claims that both Ryder's story and Avatar include a corporation spy, similarities between their respective alien inhabitants, and the spy forming a relationship with the natives and eventually switching sides.
It all sounds relatively Avatar-ish, but whatever else you can say about it, Avatar definitely doesn't have the most original storyline in the world. Many have pointed out the film's similarities to movies such as Pocahontas and Dances with Wolves, to name only two. Plus, Cameron has said that he began developing Avatar back in 1994, when he wrote the 80-page treatment for the film, which was later leaked and popped up all over the internet. Most of the elements Ryder is claiming were stolen were already there, at least in prototypical form. Sure, it's possible Cameron could have incorporated Ryder's ideas into the eventual film...but that, along with the rest of it, remains to be proven. "

James Cameron: "Well, my inspiration is every single science fiction book I read as a kid. And a few that weren't science fiction. The Edgar Rice Burroughs books, H. Avatar and Roger Dean
- Does Avatar Steal From Roger Dean?
- Since its release in December, Avatar has become a cinematic phenomenon.
The 3-D world of Pandora, the futuristic planet filled with floating mountains and mystical creatures, has captured the imagination with the film breaking box office records worldwide.
But if you thought those vivid, surrealistic landscapes look familiar, then you are not alone.
It doesn't require 3-D glasses to see why many have drawn comparisons between the Pandora created by Avatar director James Cameron and the iconic work of artist Roger Dean, whose dreamlike, fantasy paintings have graced numerous album covers, most notably those of Yes . . . - Avatar and Roger Dean - Signalnoise.com
- Avatar's floating islands compared to Roger Dean's painting:
the work of Roger Dean

the guy who did all those Yes album covers
-
everyone does dragons and has been doing them since antiquity

so Cameron did not steal that idea
as for the rest . . .
. . . the lawyers will settle that

-

What I want to know is: How do you get the water to stay level in a bottomless floating pool?
-
Some of these islands seem a bit top-heavy to me. I would think that they would capsize, leaving the tree hanging upside down.
As matter of fact (I mean fiction), the one near the center is listing to one side.
-
Maybe these islands are made of unobtainium ore. Maybe one of the less passive tribes of Na'vi will get a doomsday weapon to Earth and then we will be floating islands like the Asteroid Belt. Our "civilization" keeps murdering less advanced cultures. One day, our luck will run out and they will strike back.
What's that you said? It has already happened? Let's drop the subject. Too political and no upside in that discussion.

Mountain Banshee

You'd be grouchy too if you went way up into the mountains to get away from predators and lay your eggs in peace and then find out that all the other banshees have the same idea and have grabbed all the best nesting spots.
And then some guy jumps on your back !!! Is your mate really going to sit on the eggs or watch the young until this two-legged Na'vi gets off your back? I'd throw him off and bite him myself -- bond or no bond. The war with the humans from Earth is not my war.
not like your first solo flight in an airplane
With an airplane, if something goes wrong you can put on a parachute and jump out or ditch the plane in water or in trees or maybe land on a highway. With these banshees, you fall to your death unless you are lucky and skilled like Neytiri and use leaves to slow your descent.
I can't wait for some Avatar fans to buy some dragons from the Harry Potter fans or maybe breed some pteranodons at a biotechnology company like the mad scientists did in Jurassic Park. This pterosaur was a huge flying animal with a wingspan of up to 7.5 meters.
But seriously, you don't want to get near a real dragon. Phil Bronstein, the husband of actress Sharon Stone, was bitten by a Komodo dragon and in the aftermath of all the medical treatments and splash in the news, it destroyed their marriage. And the biggest animal flying today is probably the condor but if you got on its back it would not be able to take off and you might pick up a disease from one of these scavengers -- if it did not peck your eyes out first. So if that does not deter you, then you would have to start breeding them like dogs or horses for size and lifting strength. Along the way, you would domesticate them and the breeding would really accelerate. Some think that the same thing that makes dogs tame also speeds up their evolution. It is hard to believe that a Chihuahua (dog), an Irish wolfhound (breed that with a wolf and it chases itself), a Dachshund, a Shar-Pei, and a Mexican hairless have anything in common but they are all basically domesticated wolves.
Okay, I have told you how to breed a Mountain Banshee. In the meantime, ride a horse.

L.A.R.P. Live Avatar Role Playing
1. Sparse spread-out temperate zone trees separated by lawns and meadows is not the same as dense tropical zone jungles with snakes and other venomous creatures. The Na'vi spent a great deal of time up in the forest canopy. Translate: build some tree houses, rope walks, and swing a few vines like Tarzan. Safety first! One person getting killed will bring everything to a grinding halt. Perhaps take a Outward Bound-type training course. Put up nets like they use in a circus to break falls. Also those giant air bags like fire departments use. You can cover them with leaves or paint them green to camouflage them.
2. Real tribes know every medicinal herb and what's edible and what's poison. They would never starve like those stupid phony tribes on Survivor. Did you know that one Amazon tribe has discovered a fungus that cures blindness?
3. Make some conservation or environmental group or cause your group's favorite charity. That way you have fun, do good deeds, and thereby shut up critics who say you are just running around -- which is good PR.
4. If you wanted to get deeper into this whole thing than even James Cameron, then activities you could explore would be naturism/nudism or special ops training (though perhaps not SERE or Rambo stuff) to toughen you up for health reasons (not to portray the evil humans) but to be as healthy as the Na'vi (the folks in this video are out of shape) or you could give classes on real-life tribes that are very similar to the Na'vi or take up hang gliding and paint your glider to look like a mountain banshee.
5. Blue body paint need not be a pain that you are eager to remove at the end of the day. If you are doing it right, then it might be better than clothes. Each person should come up with their own formula. Hypo-allergenic blue body paint using natural colorings. Bug repellant. Perhaps sunscreen. Skin moisturizer which dermatologists recommend. At the end of the day, your skin should feel better not worse. The stuff they use at expensive spas for therapy like mud -- blue mud.
6. Long before Avatar was a gleam in James Cameron's eye, I have read stories of people who use trees as a means of communication. A bit New Age-y but I don't know if there is anything to it. Maybe. Some people make a living using a forked stick to find where to dig wells. Its called water witching or dowsing. So if you can do that with a dead piece of a tree, what can you do with a live tree?
7. Collect anthropology books and research different "primitive" tribes until you find one that interests your group. If your group is financially well off, then you might book a group tour to go see the tribe in Africa or South America or Australia or wherever. Better do it now because human cultures are being wiped out of existence as fast as plant and animal species. Some of my favorite tribes I read about in college have donned clothes and now look like you or me -- and may be as miserable. Our "Civilization" has its downside or the movie would not be so popular. War and deforestation and pollution and clear-cutting are some downsides.

"I advise all Christians and Muslims not to watch this movie. The year is set forever as a sign of the Lord, the date in the movie of the hero making a video is May 30th 2154 AD. "
Editor's note -- She is advising people to not watch Avatar 5 which is easy to do since the movie has not been made and will likely never be made. Okay, I admit Avatar 4 was semi-serious. But this Avatar 5 stuff is humor or at least not serious. James Cameron will be so tired by the end of production and post-production and promotional tour on Avatar 3 and ready to move on to other projects that (assuming it makes its cost back) he would sooner turn it over to another producer and director than be bothered with an Avatar 4 or 5. On the other hand, he had to sell the Terminator franchise to get the first Terminator movie done. Most people don't know that he saw little money from the Terminator franchise. This experience may make him reluctant to let anyone else work on any sequels to Avatar 3 should the studio arm twist him to make more.

this is how critics think the movie should have ended

Editor's note -- If the unobtainium is radioactive or destroyed, then the company can't mine it plus its executives are likely to face lawsuits for losing the investors' money and face prosecution for genocide. And then there is the possibiity that the Na'vi have space traveling allies on the other worlds in the Alpha Centauri System. They might seek revenge against humans. Genocide has consequences.
Then there are the wider ramifications. Most calculations of the incidence of worlds and civilizations using the Drake Equation were done before astronomers engaged in the Search for Extra Solar Planets (SESP). That's the program that does not get the publicity that SETI does. But there are now known to be hundreds of planets in the stellar systems near the Solar System. If we find inhabited worlds nearby, then the mathematics swing wildly in favor of civilizations being commonplace in the galaxy. It does not matter one whit if the Pandorans are less advanced technologically. What is more important would be their very existence. If Earth was visited one hundred thousand years ago, then we would be living in trees or in caves. If earth was visited one hundred years ago or ten years ago or one year ago (or even today), then there is very little we could do to defend ourselves against a civilization that possessed interstellar travel. They could easily escape our slow missiles and vaporize our laser weapons. There is simply no law of the universe that says all worlds have to evolve and progress on the same timetable. The chances of another world being on a 2012 level of advancement (iPhones and interferon and internet) is remote. They might have flying cars or flying saucers or technologies we cannot imagine.
So the mere existence of primitive cultures also implies the existence of supercivilizations. We are barely civilized (war, overpopulation and polluting our own air, water and soil). So if word spreads amongst other worlds in the galaxy that humans from Earth are genocidal monsters, then being barred from joining some United Stellar Systems or Federation or other diplomatic relations will be the least of our problems. They might decide on extermination of vermin. And Earth will be another asteroid belt.
Think this is all impossible? Pearl Harbor was impossible. How could the Imperial Japanese fly all the way from Japan?
A little invention called an aircraft carrier.
So when a critic says nuke'em, be kind when you talk down to their childlike minds. Don't be condescending.
Like them.

"@RuffneckRy To me, the whole concept of Avatar seeming like it's been done before (if that's how everyone interprets it) happens to be part of the message James Cameron was trying to tell us: HISTORY REPEATING ITSELF. I wouldn't be surprised if Avatar 2 covers the Na'vi being put into concentration camps"
