The Best Speed Guitar Techniques DVD Set
The first Speed Kills DVD begins with Michael Angelo Batio playing a lightening fast but interesting electric guitar solo. After just a few minutes of watching I started to laugh out loud. You know, the kind of involuntary, puzzled laugh that bursts forth when a magician does something truly unexpected and unbelievable.

I have never seen a guitar played that fast. It almost looked fake. Perhaps what is more amazing, however, is that Michael can actually teach these seemingly impossible techniques to us mere mo...

Best Jazz Guitar Lessons DVD
The Purpose of the "Play What You Hear" CD jazz guitar lesson program is to teach the student to ah...well... to play what they hear.

Seriously, the author, Chris Standring, makes a great point that many guitarists learn to master the fretboard through visualizing shapes and patterns. The unfortunate result is that solos improvised in this manner can sound contrived. Chris goes on to say that he believes that many guitarists often have no idea that they do not h...

The Problems With Local Guitar Instructors

I was only eight years old when I met my first guitar instructor and I remember it like it was yesterday. He was a part-time lounge guitarist that always smelled like cigarette smoke and definitely didn't enjoy teaching kids. He was impatient, grouchy and didn't hesitate to yell at me when I nervously chewed on my guitar pick.

The lessons were about as much fun as a Fender bender and soon I wanted to quit. Fortunately my mother understood the problem and talked me into continuing. Several teachers later we found a wonderful person that had an amazing gift for teaching guitar.

The Big Advantages Of DVD Guitar Lessons

1. You will learn from world class guitarists who are also highly skilled at teaching. If it were not for Video DVD Lessons they would be inaccessible. No more hit and miss experiences with randomly selected local guitar teachers.

2. Guided practice sessions. On the best DVDs the instructor will play along and guide you through the actual practice sessions. This helps cement professional grade practice habits that greatly speed up the learning process.

3. Flexibility. When you watch a lesson it is up to your mood and schedule. No more rigid lesson times. On a moments notice, even at 2:00 am, you can start another lesson.

4. Each lesson conveniently takes place in your home, motel room, tent or where ever you happen to be at the time.

5. Less expensive. DVD based video guitar lesson programs usually contain the equivalent of 6 to 12 months worth of guitar lessons if you were to space them out as if you were taking weekly lessons from a local guitar instructor. A local instructor typically will charge anywhere from $20 to $50 per weekly lesson. Your minimum cost, ( not including materials ), at only $20 per lesson for 6 months would be at least $520. The best guitar lesson programs range from $100 to about $200 for the same amount knowledge.

5 Tips For Avoiding DVD Guitar Lesson Ripp-Offs

1. Full Video Lessons - Some DVD based lesson programs are really just written books on a disc. Some offer short video snippets along with the written word and illustrations. The best DVD programs are all video not just short clips.

2. Good Production Values: the video lessons should be thoughtfully organized. There should be lots of close ups of both of the instructors hands as they demonstrate each lesson. The audio needs to be clear so that each note and chord can be distinctly heard.

3. The Instructor: ideally should have experience as a recording studio musician as well as touring with a band. A college degree in education and lots of hands-on teaching experience are equally important.

4. Guided Practice Sessions: this means that the video instructor first teaches you a system for practicing the guitar then plays along with you to help establish good habits. Much enjoyment and progress can be lost due to poor practice routines. In fact, I would be willing to bet that a high percentage of the people that quit do so because of a poor understanding of good practice fundamentals. Only 2 guitar lesson courses, that I am aware of, get this exactly right.

5. Jam Tracks: these are usually short recorded songs or rhythm tracks that provide a way for a guitar student to practice playing with a band. Jam Tracks can be invaluable for learning to play rhythm guitar parts in synch with other musicians or while improvising solos.

Guitar Practice Tips: The Best DVD Guitar Lessons Won't Do You A Bit Of Good Unless You Learn How To Practice Like The Pros

Learn to Play Guitar Twice as Fast While Practicing Half as Much

If you really want to learn to play guitar well you must do one simple thing before anything else. You must learn how learning takes place between your muscles and brain. If you understand the process that your brain must go through to train your muscles your practice sessions will produce predictably effective results.

You have probably heard the term muscle memory. This is the process of your brain learning and storing a set of precise instructions for each group of muscles needed for every small task you want your fingers to perform on the guitar. When muscle memory is solidly established it becomes a naturally effortless and an almost unconscious act to play the guitar well.

These tasks need to be practiced at speeds that are slow enough so that you can consistently perform them perfectly. If you practice the guitar at a tempo that produces lots of mistakes you end up teaching your muscles how to play the exercise with the mistakes included. Unfortunately muscles cannot distinguish between playing with mistakes and playing without them.

I remember back 20 plus years ago when I first started playing the Guitar,Being a victim of one of the scams, Remember "LEARN TO BURN" very deceptive marketing, You had to copy the Tab from audio tapes, because of copy right infringement ,No where on the advertisement did it mention this. Imagine a beginner , who didn't even fully understand tab. having to spend hours upon hours do this before you could even use it. Needless to say that was returned in a hurry. Any lesson that stresses the Building Blocks, Major and minor strumming chords, barre chords, power chords and the Pentatonic blues scale is the best place for beginners, I think to me, kids anyway, get too caught up in wanting to play like Eddie Van Halen in a hurry, rather than just starting from a strong core base to build upon.Great lens

One thing I agree with - buying stuff like '150 riffs' is useless - we want to play songs, not flash around with slick riffs. Nice lens - thanks.
