Good & Bad Cholesterol
Blood is watery, and cholesterol is fatty, these two do not mix at all. Thus to travel in the bloodstream, cholesterol is carried in small packages called lipoproteins. And this lipoproteins are of two types they are High density lipoprotein (HDL) or good cholesterol and Low density lipoprotein (LDL) or bad cholesterol.

Types of Lipoproteins
There are two types of Cholesterol Lipoproteins based on the density; they are LDL (low density lipoproteins) & HDL (high density lipoproteins).
LDL or bad cholesterol
Low density lipoprotein (LDL bad cholesterol) is a type of lipoprotein that transports cholesterol and triglycerides from the liver to peripheral tissues.
When too much of LDL bad cholesterol circulates in the blood, then it can slowly build up in the inner walls of the arteries that leads to the heart and brain. LDL cholesterol combine with other substances can form plaque, a thick & hard deposit that can narrow down the arteries and make it less flexible, condition called as atherosclerosis. If a blood clot forms and blocks this narrowed artery may cause a heart attack or stroke.
HDL or good cholesterol
High density lipoprotein (HDL good cholesterol) is a type of lipoprotein that brings back cholesterol from the cells to the liver.
HDL cholesterol is also called as "good" cholesterol, because a high level of HDL cholesterol seems to protect against heart attack. In the other hand low levels of HDL (less than 40 mg/dL) can increase the risk of heart disease. HDL cholesterol tends to carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver then it is excreted from the body. Many experts believe that HDL can remove excess cholesterol build up in the arteries and reduces the chances of having heart or brain attack.
Triglycerides
Triglycerides are a type of fat found in the blood and stored in the fat cells. They are the major sources of energy and common type of fat in the body.
Triglyceride is a form of fat produced in the body. High level of triglycerides can be due to overweight or obesity, no or low physical activity, cigarette smoking and excess alcohol consumption. People with high triglycerides often have a high total cholesterol level, including a high LDL bad cholesterol level and a low HDL good cholesterol level. Many people with heart disease and/or diabetes also have high level of triglycerides.
