Its called a tax credit but you get it as a refund when you file an adendum to your 2009 tax return. YES you can get it this year you do not need to wait to file next year. So time is right to check on how much you can afford and start looking for your new home.
On November 5, 2009, Congress passed a bill that included an extension and expansion of the home buyer tax credit. The bill would extend the present $8,000 tax credit for first-time home buyers through April 30, 2010. Current homeowners are eligible for a $6,500 tax credit through April 30, provided they have lived in the home they are selling, or have sold, as principal residence for five consecutive years in the past eight years. If you have your contract in place by April 30th you can still get the credit but you have to close by Jun 30,2010
