The Compact, Affordable, And Powerful HP LaserJet 6L Printer
Ranked #66,269 in Computers & Electronics, #1,026,350 overall
The low-priced HP LaserJet 6L printer is sure to please those looking for a personal laser printer from Hewlett-Packard. It's nicely priced and full of features that help it to deliver a decent rate of print speed and a healthy dollop of reliability and durability. This this is not to mention that the quality of its printed product with HP 6L bulk toner will generally be very good across the board.
Out With The Old...
It's the case that HP has discontinued most of the 6-series printers of late, which is a shame because Hewlett-Packard worked hard to include a number of capabilities that complemented the personal-printer nature of this line of laser printers. It probably isn't a good candidate as a workgroup printer due to its relatively sedate rate of printing, though.
This particular laser printer can kick out six pages per minute, which still exceeds the capability of almost any inkjet or other type of printer out there. The six black-and-white pages per minute that can be produced by the 6L will also come out looking more than acceptable at 600 dots per inch using HP bulk toner, which means there will be little to complain about when it comes to the quality of the print job.
As far as connectivity goes, it's purely standard Hewlett-Packard in that it's connected via hard-wire and by use of a traditional (and older) parallel port. There is no USB capability with this particular printer, but at about $70 for a new one -- if it can be found -- that hardly seems to be something that would concern most people looking for a bargain laser jet printer.
The printer only has a single megabyte of RAM available, though it can be upgraded to about 9 MB. Given this, it should be no surprise that the 6L will share processing duties with any computer to which it's attached. With a 24 MHz microprocessor, it's also is easier to understand the sedate nature of the six pages per minute this laser printer is capable of producing when tasked.
When it comes to storage capacity, the printer does well enough at holding about 100 sheets of paper, all of it going into a single tray. When it comes to what kinds of paper stock this machine can print on, it's a fairly diverse collection that includes transparencies, labels, envelopes and plain paper. It also features the ability to print on a relatively large number of paper sizes as well.
This particular Hewlett-Packard is also fairly durable, featuring a monthly duty cycle of about 6,000 pages. When one takes into account that a low price is delivering that high duty cycle, the printer then becomes even more impressive. It also has a print cartridge rated for 2,500 sheets before needing replacement. This personal printer, therefore, will have a very low cost-per-printed-page ratio.
When looked at as a whole, it's easy to see why the HP LaserJet 6L printer is still sought after. It makes use of Windows NT 4.0, Microsoft DOS and IBM OS/2 operating systems. As well, it comes with good durability and a long-lasting printer cartridge. Indeed, it's fairly difficult to find much to pick over when it comes to finding fault with this particular printer, especially when one considers that only costs about $70 for a new unit, when one can be found.
When you find one, or if you still own one, replacing the HP 6L laser toners might be a concern. With the standard of quality of Hewlett-Packard, however, many e-retailers stock HP LaserJet bulk toner along with many other brands of ink and toner, available at a great price at your convenience.
