Where to buy the HP Slate

Ranked #4,870 in Computers & Electronics, #91,082 overall

The HP Slate 500 was launched in November 2010. It's a tablet PC that is designed to take on the Apple iPad, and it's two winning points are that it runs a super powerful 1.86GHz processor and uses the Windows 7 operating system. The benefit of Windows of course is that all software that works on Windows (pretty much all software period), will work on the HP Slate 500.

It is currently available only directly from HP, and from eBay and amazon - see below. We will update this page as other retailers start to stock it.

Please note that the HP Slate 500 is a completely different tablet to the HP Touchpad. The HP Slate 500 is Windows operated, the HP Touchpad is Palm webOS operated. For the HP Touchpad, click here. For the HP Slate 500, please read on.

Where the HP Slate scores over the Apple iPad

1. It can cope with Adobe flash, which the iPad famously can't. This means that browsing the web on the HP Slate 500 is no different to browing the web on your PC - unlike on the iPad, you won't get chunks of the screen with those blue cubes to indicate the missing flash. It should also be able to handle any software that uses Adobe products - applications that use Adobe Air-Con for instance should work on the HP Slate.

2. It has a built-in USB port. This is great for business users. They can work on the HP Slate while on the run, and then simply upload their stuck to their offie PCs using the USB port. The iPad doesn't have a USB port - you have to buy an additional dock with the port to transfer files. is the iPad really cheaper when you add in all the extras?

3. It has a built-in web-cam which can be used for Skype calls. Again this is brilliant news for business people who need to connect to the office. The iPad did not have a web-cam but the iPad 2 now does.

4. The 1.86 GHz Intel Atom processor is super fast. The iPad's processor is only 1 GHZ (and this is the reason the iPad left off multi-tasking and other stuff - it slowed their machine down due to the weak processor).

5. With the iPad, you have to buy all sorts of expensive extras, such as camera connection kits etc - when you take all that into account, the price of the HP Slate 500 looks very reasonable!

This is the official video of what the HP Slate 500 can do. As you can see, HP have aimed it at business customers, even though lots of personal users will find the Slate really attractive especially if they enjoy Skyping.

HP slate in Sinfapore please.... I beg you!

In The Netherlands, halas, I cannot buy the HP Slate - yet? Very regrettable, as the Slate has not two (windows and processor) advantages over the Ipad, but -at least- three: the most important in my opinion being the active digitizer in addition to the touch screen facility. No more fuzzing with your fingers if you want to write, sketch, or - for artists- paint. And that with high quality software! Tremendous! HP, please do export your superb Slate to Europe ASAP. No other producer has come with an active digitizer slate tablet for such a good price. Give the Ipad c.s. a run for their money!

Amazon Kindle Fire

Kindle Fire, Full Color 7" Multi-touch Display, Wi-Fi

Amazon Price: $199.00 (as of 05/26/2012)Buy Now

Amazon's Kindle Fire is a newcomer to the tablet market, and the very low price of $199 is very attractive. It can't do all the things the HP Slate 500 can do - there are no cameras or any of the business extras that you get in the HP Slate (office software, the Wacom digitiser), but given the price it's still a bargain.
