Hair Pulling Disease - The Cause

The cause of Hair Pulling Disease (Trichotillomania) is uncertain although preliminary research indicates it may be a neurological condition and have a genetic connections. It's also believed hair pulling disease may be caused by other illnesses. Regardless of its cause it is a real condition suffered by real people.

Hair Pulling Disease - Emotional Impact

Hair Pulling Disease can have a profound emotional impact on the person suffering with it. Why? Because it is not well known or understood by the general public. As a result intense feelings of shame and fear of exposure cause them to avoid desperately needed medical care of all types.

Hair Pulling Disease - Danger of Swallowing Hair

It's not uncommon for individuals who intentionally pull out their hair to swallow it. While small quantities may be harmless and not too worrisome if enough hair is ingested it can cause a hairball to form and be dangerous. When this occurs the intestines can be blocked and surgery may be required.

I don't fully agree with all of Michael's comment below, trichotillomania is not about vanity, it actually has a lot to do with OCD and can lead to some serious consequences if left unchceked, as explained here: Trichophagia Treatment

I have been pulling my hair since I was 3. I am now 30. When I was younger, my mom took me to the doctor and they told her it was an anxiety, and I would get over it. I have never gotten over it. I pull when I am in the car, when I am bored, when I am stressed. Since I have done it for so long, I am extremely good at hiding my spots. When I am pulling, most of my friends and family will stay "Stop" and I will know immediately what they are talking about. It is embarrassing, but I am coming to grips with it and just trying to educate more people about it. I have also found it's often confused with alopecia.
