Hairworld: The Pursuit of Excellence, the PBS video, captures Team USA as its members clip, comb and spray their way to the 31st HairWorld Championships in Moscow, Russia. The competition is a spectacle of rich colors and provocative glamour; 800 stylists from 50 countries compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in timed tests of styling skill.
This is a special edition of the 'Hairy Situations' series. Usually the pages looked at episodes of retro tv shows where hair was somehow a big component in their storylines. We featured different shows, often US sitcoms from the 1950s-1970s.

Produced by Organisation Mondiale Coiffure (OMC), the world's largest beauty organization and the National Cosmetology Association (NCA), The Hairworld Championships of Beauty brings together over 1000 top competitors from 60 countries and 5 continents all competing for the coveted OMC World Cups of the technical and fashion Categories in Ladies' and Gent's events. At the Gala Awards Ceremony 4,000 beauty professionals, cheered for their countries and teams with anthems and flags.The 2010 Hairdressing and Beauty World Competition will be held from 6 to 8 november 2010 at the Mondial Coiffure Beauté. The ultimate reward for the young hairdressers who come to the MCB to test themselves on the OMC podium.
MCB welcomes every year international hairdressing competitions organized by the OMC.A series of dramatic tests to find out who is the best.
This is not the only competition of beauty professionals, national or international. There is also, for instance, America's Beauty Show.

About the Author
Tabatha Coffey was first introduced to America as a contestant in the Bravo reality show Shear Genius, hosted by actress Jaclyn Smith, where she quickly earned a reputation for her outspokenness and intensity. Although she was ousted in the 6th episode, she had won nearly all of the competitions before that and was voted as the show's Fan Favorite.
In 2008, Bravo asked her to star in her own reality series, Tabatha's Salon Takeover, which combines Coffey's hairdressing and business expertise with her edgy style as she assists salons in danger of closing. Coffey has also appeared on Make Me a Supermodel, The Tyra Banks Show as a part of Banks' Glam Squad, and The Biggest Loser along with Tim Gunn, giving make-overs to the show's contestants.
As a platform artist for an international product company, she also tours different countries 6-12 times a year. She participates in Fashion Week and has been featured in several publications including Seventeen, Marie Claire, and Mademoiselle. Most recently she hosted the red carpet at the Spirit Awards at IFC, and was awarded the HRC visibility award in Houston.

HAIRWORLD: THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE follows the National Cosmetology Association's (NCA) Team USA as its members clip, comb and spray their way to the 31st HairWorld Championships in Moscow, Russia, where 800 stylists from 50 countries compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in timed tests of styling skill.

Dale Dees from Orlando, Florida, discovered his passion for hairstyling while singing and dancing in a traveling theatre group. Dees left the theatre and joined cosmetology school, but it wasn't long before he found himself in the spotlight again - this time on the competition floor.
Often described as the "Olympics" of hairdressing, HAIRWORLD captures the vivid sculptures of hair, the daring couture, the stunning models and the cheers of the crowd as high fashion meets fierce international rivalry in this battle of the bouffant. "Just imagine the sporting Olympics with all the different countries represented and all of the noise and all of the pride and the cheering," explains National Cosmetology Association (NCA) competitor Dale Dees. "That is how our Olympic event is. It's the same energy. It's the same power. It's the same camaraderie. Even though you can't understand each other, you know that hair looks pretty darn amazing, and so you understand that."
Although the competition in the main categories can last less than an hour, preparation takes many months. HAIRWORLD follows the three NCA team trainers, Ron Hawkins in North Carolina, Andrea Turrisi in Connecticut and Michael Della Penna in Florida, as they embark on rigorous training with their teams. Each competitor works with his or her trainer to create the perfect look, balancing originality and complexity with the constraints of the competition. For months before competition, they practice their prescribed hairstyles time after time, day after day. "There's no days off," insists competitor Danny DiLeo. "There's no 'let's go to the movies'; there's none of that. It's absolutely train, train, and train, and then train."
"It consumes your life to be a stylist; it really does. It has to be something that is in your blood. It has to be something you eat, drink, sleep and breathe." Although each character is diverse in background, each expresses the same love, passion and fierce ambition for competitive hairstyling. "The focus is the creativity and having the love," says team trainer Ron Hawkins. "I think that plays an important factor, is having the love of being able to do it and being involved in it. You've got to love it."

THE PURSUIT OF EXCELLENCE is a series of four one-hour films, celebrates the ambition, determination and passion of those who pursue distinction in slightly unconventional fields. Each film showcases the training and preparation required to be competitive and reveals the surprising, and sometimes heartbreaking, results of that dedication.

Good Hair, Chris Rock DVD
When one of Chris Rock's young daughters asked him an innocent question about having "good hair," the comedian probably had no idea just how complicated the answer would be. Fortunately for us, he decided to find out, and the result is this funny, informative, and highly entertaining documentary of the same name.
Turns out that for a great many African-American women (and quite a few men, too), "good hair" means "white hair"--i.e., straight and lanky--while the natural or "nappy" look is bad. And oh, the lengths and expense women will go to in order to get "good hair"! In the course of the film, which was directed by Jeff Stilson and cowritten by Rock and several others, Rock first travels to Atlanta, home of the Bronner Brothers Hair Show, where thousands of folks buy and learn how to use new products.
The show is also the site of the outrageous and climactic Hair Battle Royale, in which four stylists compete for money and fame. It's there that he learns about sodium hydroxide, better known as hair "relaxer," the "nap antidote," or the "creamy crack" (as effective as the chemical substance is for straightening hair, it can also be highly dangerous).
In Harlem and Los Angeles, he investigates the extraordinary popularity of hair weaves, which can cost tens of thousands of dollars annually to create and maintain; Rock even goes to Madras, India, source of most of the hair used in weaves (for Indian women, tonsure, or shaving their heads, is a ritual act of self-sacrifice).
Along the way, Rock interviews a great many young women with fabulous hair (including actresses Nia Long, Raven-Symone, and Kerry Washington, and rappers Salt-N-Pepa), but he also talks to the esteemed poet Maya Angelou, as well as men like rapper-actor Ice-T.
Also the Reverend Al Sharpton. Sharpton, who is very amusing (he's referred to as "the Dalai Lama of relaxed hair"), is about the only celeb who touches on racial issues, pointing out that while it's African Americans who use the overwhelming majority of these hair products, the companies who sell them tend to be owned by Asians. Some viewers may object to the film's lack of a strong socio-political stance, but others will no doubt prefer the lighter touch, including a hilarious discussion at a barber shop about dating women with hair weaves (basically, it's "hands off the hair, pal"). --Sam Graham
