Party Themes of Halloween

Themed Halloween party decorations are an easy way to create a fun and authentic setting. For unique Halloween party ideas, you can choose a traditional or modern theme, or incorporate a spooky cemetery setting in your home.

Being Gothic has it's advantages at least once per year, since my house is somewhat decorated for it all year long. However, we still take the time and spend extra money to create a scary and more appropriate Halloween party themed home for the kids.

Listed below are several themes you can choose from, or use a few of each to have a completely random party this year...

Traditional Fall Decor

Pumpkins for Halloween Decorations

Not everyone likes to spook their guests, so traditional Fall Halloween decorating is quite popular, especially for country and colonial styled homes.

Pumpkins, gourds, rich amber and fire red leaves, grape vines, dried branches, hay, apples, scarecrows, corn stalks, candy corn, and old wooden props complete the look for a festive harvest celebration.

Party games and activities include bobbing for apples, making candy apples, pumpkin carving contests, hiding candy corn, hay rides and mazes, costume contests and awards, and toilet paper mummies. :-)

Modern and Contemporary

Elegant Modern Halloween Decorations

Halloween is now sophisticated - with wine goblets, scrolled dish patterns, glamorous art deco centerpieces and cutout chandeliers, white and metal-framed pumpkins, feathered wreaths, and unique candle arrangements.

Theme is very adult-oriented, so would include a lot of elegant food options, drinking games, spooky stories, costume parties, watching horror movies, and dancing the night away.

Halloween from the Grave

Spooky Halloween Party Decorations

This theme is meant to spook people of all ages using death as the main culprit. Skulls, graves, tombstones, coffins, corpses, rotting and shrunken heads, bones, and ghostly images.

Props such as foggers, led lights, torn cloth, and spiderwebs are a must to provide a realistic haunted atmosphere. Jumping from behind graves, climbing out of coffins, skeleton arms that grab you from nowhere. Meant to collect as many screams as possible and usually the whole night is dedicated to it. In fact, some people count screams...and hope for more each year.

Bleeding candles, food that looks like body parts, blood colored drinks, music from the dark realms, and scariest costume contests create a party in their own.

Wicked Witch Mystical Theme

Halloween Decorations Complete with a Cauldron

Pointed hats, broomsticks, and black cats. Oh my! Old lady sits in a rocker...we've all seen it. I'd believe an elegant dark witch before I gave a traditional black witch with a big ugly green nose any credit. I must be desensitized from living in New England. LOL!

Cauldron foggers are available and tying broomsticks to a string to make them fly off by themselves is creative. Creepy pumpkins with seed guts and spiders crawling out, potion bottles, jars filled with body part candy, crystal balls, wands, spiderwebs, and looking like you are actually using a cauldron is a much better attempt.

Things that go Bump in the Night

Scary Halloween Party Decorations

Vampires, werewolves, mummies, Frankenstein, zombies, and ghouls create a monster party!

Blood dripping, slime falling off the ceilings, and eyeballs enhance the creep factor. Body part food once again plays a role, as well as faux stone props and a mysterious dungeon setting. Cages filled with skeletons and bones, hanging chains, bats and music with plenty of screams adds to the creature feel.

Vintage Horror films, monster movies, costume awards, mask decorating, Haunted houses, and frightful party games creates a fun Halloween setting for everyone.

Masquerade / Carnival

Halloween Masquerade - Masked Party Ideas

An elegant party theme for adults - a night filled with ballroom gowns, masks to conceal identity or show another side of you, dancing, and fun party games. Use candlelight to create a dark ambiance or replace bulbs with flicker lights. Serve an elegant meal, then bring out the gourmet chocolate treats and champagne for a high-class appeal.

For a Mardi Gras masquerade, costumes will be cheaper and the plastic beads plentiful. Throw a mini float building party using craft supplies, balloons, silk flowers, and a few party store decorations. Voodoo-type decorations such as chicken bones and shrunken heads could be a scary addition to Mardi Gras.

Creepy Castles

A medieval theme that can work both ways...using a castle and dungeon. If you have a few nice urns or planters you can add dark flowers and arrangements to make them castle-like. Include vines spilling over the sides of your planters, and cover boring planters with fabric, tulle, or "creepy cloth". Spook your guests with a few chains on the walls, hang a few sword props, and purchase some of those 3D "ancestor" vampire and ghost photos.

Include all of your wrought iron decorations in the theme. Drape fabric across your walls for a dramatic touch. Panne velvets, satins, tulle, torn and dyed cloth, and lace are the easiest to hang.

Fantasy and Mythical Beasts

Have an enchanted evening! This theme forces your guests to be highly creative in their costume attire with dragons, fairies, mermaids, phoenix, wizards, centaurs, gryphon, elves, and so forth. You can include fairy tales and twisted fairy tales with this theme as well.

Create a natural forest setting with vines, tree branches, and appropriate wall murals. A castle theme could also be closely related. For fairies, you may want to add a lot of glitter and sparkle to as many decorations as possible, especially your pumpkins and vines. Include classical or new age music. Pass out wands as favors to keep the magic spreading all year long.

Pirates - Creatures of the Sea

Pirate Halloween Decorations

Arrrrrgh! All ye enchanted sea captains jump aboard to sail the high seas and find treasure...

Pirate Halloween decorations are popular every few years, but it's hard to create a turbulent sea atmosphere. Start a few weeks early trying to turn your home into an old ship and use foam waves for the front yard setting. Circle off your windows with cardboard, create sea monsters from stuffing old clothing in the shape of tentacles and fins. Use a treasure chest to hold candy, gold coins, and pirate loot for your trick-or-treaters.

I highly recommend the following CD for your music compilation of the night. Very appropriately dark for your ship theme...
