Hammond Innes was one of the fathers of the thriller genre, writing from 1937 to 1996. Although his work has in some cases dated, it is still popular for those who prefer tight-plotted, intelligent, thrillers.

Many of his books pitted man directly against nature, and the weather systems and environments described are as much a part of the story as the characters. Shipwrecks, storms and the polar ice caps were all featured in his books as was the frequent question of whether people could rise above themselves under adversity.

He defined many of the conventions of the genre as it emerged, and developed throughout the twentieth century.

About the evacuation of St Kilda. St Kilda is a small group of islands in the North Atlantic, uninhabitable due to poor conditions and now a sanctuary for sea birds. The original inhabitants were evacuated in the 1930's but in the story the military briefly used it as a base. This is the story of a second evacuation of St Kilda, in the face of an oncoming Atlantic storm.

Hammond Innes at his best, Atlantic Fury pits man against nature in a race against time to rescue the stranded islanders. With an old mystery still to be solved, things are never as simply as they seem.
