A Beloved Fairy Tale

Sometimes I wonder off into my mind and dream childlike things. I'm sent back in time by a thought, a picture, a memory, and sometimes a song. Now that I have two children of my own, I often glimpse into their child fantasies. It reminds me of times when I too would drift off into fairy tales. When I was growing up, I often listened to music. I loved to dance around my room and sing. There were certain songs that transfixed me. There was one in particular that captured my imagination--Thumbelina performed by Larry Groce. It was on my well worn out Disney record. Incidentally, my favorite of the 1980's Faerie Tale Theater's was also Thumbelina. I guess I have a fondness for her. Maybe it is the thoughts of fairies flying around, or maybe it was her plight in escaping Toad or Mr. Mole. Whatever the reason, I am taken back in time when I am reminded of Thumbelina. I hope I draw out your childlike fancy in this lens.

Larry Groce's Thumbelina

There is something magical in this man's voice. It transports me to a magical place. It lulls me, soothes me. I cannot describe it really. It touched my little 7 year old heart, and I feel 7 once again when I hear it. This song was featured on Disney Children's Favorites 2 which was released in 1979.

Carrie Fisher as Thumbelina

Back in the height of her Star Wars days, Carrie Fisher played a delightful young lady named Thumbelina. She is innocent, sweet, and a joy to watch. I think my favorite scenes are with the sparrow. Thumbelina rescues a frozen sparrow and eagerly awaits for his return when her fate seems sealed by the fact that Mr. Mole wants to marry her.

Versions of the Movie Thumbelina

There are many good versions of Thumbelina out there. While I do feel that the Faerie Tale Theater version is the best, these movies are great as well.

Thumbelina (1994 version)

This version of Thumbelina is animated and very cute. The song "Let Me Be Your Wings" was a hit written by Barry Manilow. I think you will enjoy the comedy and sweet romance that develops.

Help Our Cause

At Christopher's Closet, we believe in the power of 5. Five dollars helps provide materials to rural hospitals to better prepare them when a family is experiencing a still birth. Hand knitted hats, birth certificates, and blankets are given to families who have lost a baby in still birth. Cameras and other supportive materials are donated to the hospitals. My CafePress shop Always and Forever will give proceeds towards this effort. 10% of those proceeds supports our local pregnancy resource center.
