During his time in jail, Valentine fell in love with the daughter of the jailer, as she often visited. Before he was put to death, it is said that Valentine sent a revealing letter to the girl and signed it, "From Your Valentine".

Sadly, Valentine was executed on February 14, 270 AD. Sometime around 496 AD, Pope Gelasius proclaimed Feb. 14 as the day to give honor to Valentine, who had received the title of saint.
