Popular phrases in Hawaii -- LOCAL STYLE
(with mainland English translation)

Blend in with the culture of the island...
And Remember - No Honk of the Angry horn when you hear - k bradda?!

  • Howzit?!
    "How are you?"
    "How's it going"
    "How have you been?"

    Howzit! defined by region:
    How are you doing? (English)
How YOU doin'?! (Joey-speak / NYC)

VERY popular phrase as you're passing by people on the Beaches of the North Shore (if you do NOT say Howzit, and instead say, I how are you doing today sir? They'll KNOW you're a tourist!!!)

  • Braddah / Brah
    Brother / Friend, Buddy

Try: Howzit Braddah! or "Eh, brah!"
    Then you're REALLY flyin'!

  • Da kine = Anything to which you are referring.

Versatile word used to replace words that can't be remembered or are unknown while you are speaking

Usually it's something really cool or good. Or THE thing to have. Like: Ooooooh das da KINE Brah!

But this is the most ecclectic word that's used all over the place in different ways.

  • Grind = To eat.
    Grinds = Good food.

(and this is important to note if you're from New England. They're not asking if you want a sub, a hero, or a sandwich. This is ANY kind of food.)

  • Broke da mout' = Yummie! Delicious!
(usually referring to food... but tell me how this works as a pick up line.)

  • Ono = Tasty.
    Onoliscious = Very tasty, delicious!

If you're doing a comparison taste test:
"Thas Mo bettah!" = That is much better!

  • K den
    OK, agreed.

    OR (depending on the tone)
Okay then, if that's the way you want it.

  • How you figga?
    What do you think?

  • Lolo = Dummy, Stupid
(Don't let anyone call you this with a smile!)

    However, if someone says,
    "Das Lolo!"
    That's different, that's just sayin':
    "That's Dumb! or
    "That's crazy! or
    "That doesn't make any sense!"

  • No can = Cannot, Not Possible
(I still don't know THAT word - no matter what the translation)

    Nevah = Never
(another word I still can't compute in my mind)

  • Slippahs = Flip flops, thongs, slippers that you wear in public.

  • Talk story = Chat, rap, chew the fat, share experiences,

  • Whaddsdascoops = What's the scoop? What's going on?

  • Hawaiian Time
    To be late
To arrive whenever is comfortable for you - no hurry

    Come round 5-ish
Come around 5pm, give or take 30 minutes - or whenever

  • Hana Hou = One more time, do it again! ENCORE!

A Hui Hou! = Blessings on you until we meet again!

  • Hele On = Move on, Let's go, Get moving!

  • Fo' What = Why? How come? "For what".
Fo' Real = Are you sure. "For real".
    Garans = Guaranteed.

  • An Den
    What happened next, "And then"

  • Stink eye = Mean or dirty look
    (often right before a fight)
    * Don't give it, and don't receive it!

Talk stink = speaking badly about someone (Gossip!)

  • What Like Beef!?!
Ok - now THIS is really important!
Especially if you're at a bar and someone says this to you.

They are NOT asking if you like meat!
Hawaiians are not that inquisitive whether people are vegetarians or not (leave that to the Californians to ask that question of you!)

    Instead, they are really asking:
    "Do you want to fight!?!"

  • Give 'um = Go for it dude, try your hardest.
(now if you say this after they ask you if you want beef - well - try a cold steak on your eye in the morning and take 2 asprin - garans!)

  • To da max = All the way; most you can get.

Ass right = that's right. Thas' right on!

  • Tanks = Thanks!

  • Pau = Finished / Done / Completed

(Alternative answer to someone who asks if you want beef.
Your reply = "Nah, Brudda, we pau.")

Pau hana = finished work for the day

Pau hana Friday = It's PARTY time!!!!
