Hawaii Drivers Education Requirements
You must be a minimum of at least 15 years old to get your driver's permit. In Hawaii, you must be at least 18 years old before you can take the driving test and get your unrestricted driver's license. Therefore, a graduated licensing program was established in 2006 in order to make the transition from permit to license easier. 30 hours of classroom time are required in order to complete the first step of the process to get your learner's permit. The next step is achieving 6 hours of driving time, though this cannot be attempted all at once. This can be done by taking either 4 hours of simulation training and 2 hours of actual driving or 6 hours of actual driving. No more than 4 hours can be simulated driving experience.
The graduated licensing system has been adopted by many states. While you can still get your traditional driver's license at 16 years old, it comes with many provisions now and these are only gradually lifted a few at a time until the driver is 18 years old. Only then can teen drivers drive without restrictions placed on their driver's licenses.
