I love potato salad and your Hawaiian Potato Salad recipe sounds delicious!
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Mar 24, 2012 @ 12:24 pm | delete
No offense taken. Your typical version of potato salad sounds like the one we eat in eastern Canada. I didn't name this recipe, but found it many, many years ago online. I wonder if calling it Hawaiian might have been a way to say 'special.' Otherwise, I would have expected to see pineapple or something else uniquely Hawaiian in it.
  • KonaGirl Mar 25, 2012 @ 6:06 pm | delete
LOL. OMG! No never pineapple in potato salad. Maybe pineapple in coleslaw. I have discovered while living in NY that people love putting canned pineapple in what they call "cabbage salad". It's not one of my faves, but it's eatable. (I wish I could put a rolling laughing emoticon here). I have only been to Montreal on one end of Canada and Vancouver on the other end. Would love to see a "Canandian Style" potato salad lens!
  • Treasures-By-Brenda Mar 26, 2012 @ 9:35 am | delete
Canadian potato salad (at least in my experience) would have potatoes, onion, mayo, boiled egg, salt & pepper. People add additions according to what they like and are used to. My mother always put in frozen peas. They were nice, texture-wise but I have a son who would not touch anything with peas...or painfully pick them out so that is something we quickly gave up.
  • KonaGirl Mar 22, 2012 @ 8:07 pm | delete
I was born and raised in Hawaii, and have spent most of my life there. I am a mix poi bowl of Hawaiian, Irish, Scot, Welsh and English descent. No offense to you Brenda, but the only people that I know in Hawaii that put sweet pickles, pickle relish, vinegar, bacon or sugar in a potato salad are people that have migrated from the mainland. Typically a local "Hawaiian style" potato salad does not contain any of those ingredients. Of course, a salad as in any form of cooking is all personal taste, but I would not call them a "Hawaiian Potato Salad". I would call it a "Midwest Style" or maybe a "California Style", but not a "Hawaiian Style" potato salad. Hawaiian style is really very simple. Potato (duh);; Best Food or Hellman's mayo (no substitution like Miracle Whip), finely mined onion or sliced green onion; finely grated or shredded carrot, Ajinomoto, sat & pepper and maybe hard boiled egg, but mostly not. Sometimes finely shredded napa cabbage is added, but that is it; nothing else to be considered "Local style".

I make mine with steamed Idaho potatoes, sometimes I use red potatoes. I add mayo, dijon mustard, pickle juice, celery, onion and include both sweet and dill pickles. I will have to try this Hawaiian recipe. It's very different.

I had never heard of Hawaiian Potato Salad and did expect to see tropical fruit in it, so you got me there. I like Martha's idea of the olive oil and mustard. I use both mayo and mustard, I guess because my Mom did and chopped pickles and pickle juice are a must.
  • kare2share Jan 21, 2011 @ 12:32 pm | delete
Hawaiian potato salad is my favorite kind because that way I don't have to choose between macaroni, egg or potato salad -- I get them all in one! I also like the way you've lightened it up with yogurt. Thanks for sharing your recipe and tips!

Hi Brenda! Just wanted to say I made this potato salad for our neighborhood memorial day picnic. It was yummy! Everyone loved it. It's a "keeper".

I did add additional dressing but otherwise just as you have it here. Also, that dressing is so good it would be great on any salad, I think. Or to make coleslaw and add celery seeds.

I know I'm a little late, but congrats on the purple star. This sounds like a good recipe to try this Memorial Day weekend. I pretty much hate pickles so I'll be leaving those out, but otherwise it sounds delicious. 5*

The very next time I make potato salad it's going to be this version. I think it sounds awesome. We plant yukon gold potatoes each year and this year I think we'll plant even more...that's a great tip. Also, I think I'll steam them as Martha suggests. Excellent!
