Meet Hazrat Inayat Khan

Here is a quote that gives you a feel for Hazrat Inayat Khan:

"The belief of the Muslim cannot be the same as that of the Jewish people, nor can the Christian belief be the same as that of the Buddhists. However, the wise man understands all beliefs, for he is one with them all."

Khan has written many books including: The Art of Being and Becoming; Spiritual Dimensions of Psychology; and Mastery Through Accomplishment. One of his earliest students was Samuel Lewis who later was dubbed "Sufi Sam" and who established the Dances of Universal Peace in the 1960s. The heart with wings is a symbol of Sufism and there is a song and dance titled Only a Heart With Wings Can Fly.

Here's another quote: "There are those who are like a lighted candle: they can light other candles, but the other candles must be of wax - if they are of steel, they cannot be lighted."

More on Inayat Khan

As a spiritual teacher Hazrat Inayat Khan had a desire to unite the world in the peace. Inayat Khan was a member of the Chisti Sufi Order. Abu Hasana was Hazrat's teacher. He studied with Abu Hasana for four years, until the teacher passed away, instructing his disciple on his deathbed to "Go to the Western World and unite East and West with the magic of your music." Two years later, Inayat Khan traveled to the United States, using the appeal of his music to spread the message of his spiritual insight.

He later resettled in France. At one point Inayat Khan developed a service called the Universal Worship Service, which honors all the world's wisdom traditions, both known and forgotten. There are many commonalities between this Universal Worship Service and the Dances of Universal Peace which was later extablished by one of Khans students Sam Lewis.

Khan passed away in New Delhi in 1927. But he left a legacy to his son, Vilayat Khan who has established the Omega Institute in New York and has carried on his father's work in the West.

Spiritual Dimensions of Psychology by Hazrat Inayat Khan

Here is one of my favorite quotes on Stilling the Mind from this book:

"The mind can be stilled by the practice of physical repose. By sitting in a certain posture a certain effect is created. Mystics in their science know of different ways of sitting in silence, and each way has a certain significance. And it is not only an imaginary significance: it products a definite result. I have had, both personally and through other persons to sit. There was the warrior's way, the student's way, the way of the meditative person, the way of the businessman, of the laborer, of the lawyer, of the judge, of the inventor. Imagine, how wonderful that the mystic should have found this out and have had the experience of it for thousands of years: the great effect that sitting in a certain posture has on a person, and especially on his mind."

An oasis of knowledge, in the desert of misdirection. Hazrat Inayat Khan has in simple and elegant English revealed the secrets of the Universe.

Symbol of the Mystics

"The symbol of the mystics of China was a branch laden with fruit in their hand. What does this mean? It means that the purpose of life is to arrive at that stage where every moment becomes fruitful. And what does fruitful mean? Does it mean fruits for oneself? No, trees do not bear fruit for themselves, but for others. True profit is not that profit which one makes for oneself, true profit is that which one makes for others. After attaining all that one wants to attain, be it earthly or heavenly, what is the result of it all? The result is only this, that all that one has attained, that one has acquired, whether earthly or heavenly, one can place before others. Propkar, which in the language of the Vedanta means working for the benefit of others,is the only fruit of life."

The Art of Being and Becomng

Here is a quote from The Art of Being and Becoming:

"In education, in religion, or in anything else, the best thing one can do is to introduce the spirit of friendliness. And how can we introduce it? This is something that cannot arise only be reading some books about it. There exist innumerable societies and institutions of brotherhood everywhere, but they prove to be anything but brotherhood. Therefore that is not the way. The way is for an individual to be brought to understand fully that the essence of morals and of religion and of education is one, and that one essence is the manner of friendship. Sufis of all ages have named it suluk, which means divine manner, beneficence. That is why the best education is beneficence: how to bring pleasure and happiness to another. And one can begin to learn this by understanding fully what friendliness is and by practicing it at the same time."

5.0 out of 5 stars My Own Personal Bible, December 2, 1997
By A Customer

Not being a religious person, and having no recognizable beliefs in the matter of religion or God, many of my friends were surprised to hear me refer to this book as "My own personal bible".

Hazrat Inayat Khan, a Sufi master and enlightened coach for the western world, writes here his apolitical, non-denominational, personal manifesto of all that he found to be worthwhile and valuable in this collective agreement we call reality.

Although he wrote other books, it is this one which I consider to be his definitive work. I read the book once and found so much relevant life-altering material, that I resolved to read it again and highlight the most important parts for easier future reference. After highlighting over 50% of the first two chapters, I stopped. I was highlighting almost the entire book! "The Art of Being and Becoming" by Hazrat Inayat Khan is a book full of practical advice which actually has the capability to enlighten the reader just through reading. He calls all of us to be as great and magnificent as he.

This book makes him truly immortal, as one can perceive the beautiful person that is Hazrat Inayat Khan flowing like a river from the pages of this book.

Some of My Favorite Quotes from Hazrat Inayat Khan

"If there is anything that works against the vanity of the ego, it is love."

"Where there is life and love, there is magnetism; love itself is the healing power and the remedy for all pain."

"The giver is greater than the gift."
from Bowl of Saki, by Hazrat Inayat Khan

"As each man differs from his fellow-men in his ideas and thoughts, so each differed in his choice of the ideal idol."

"It is not necessary for us to be told that we have progressed; we ourselves will know when our heart goes forward."

"When a person compares one particular teaching of a prophet with the teaching of another prophet, he also makes a great mistake, because the teachings of the prophets have not all been of the same kind. The teachings are like the works of a composer who writes music in all the different keys, and who puts the highest note and the lowest note and all the notes of different octaves into his music. The teachings of the prophets are nothing but the answer to the demands of individual and collective souls. Sometimes a childlike soul comes and asks, and an answer is given appropriate to his understanding; and an old soul comes and asks, and he is given an answer suited to his evolution. It is not doing justice to either to compare a teaching which Krishna gave to a child with one which Buddha gave to an old soul. It is easy to say, 'I do not like the music of Wagner; I simply hate it.' But I should think it would be better first to become like Wagner and then to hate if one still wants to. To weigh, to measure, to examine, to pronounce an opinion on a great personality, one must first rise to his stage of development; otherwise the best thing is a respectful attitude. Respect in any form is the way of the wise."

"In order to learn forgiveness, man must first learn tolerance."
