History of New Year's Resolutions
The history of New Year's Celebrations dates back to Babylonian times 4000 years ago. The first crescent moon after the Vernal Equinox (spring), marked the beginning of the new year. Astronomically, this is a more logical marking point of the beginning of the new year. Julius Caesar created a calendar, known as the Julian calendar that many follow today. The Julian calendar is more arbitrary, and does not have any astronomical significance. The history of New Year's Resolutions goes all the way back to 153 B.C. Janus, a mythical king of Rome (hence January), had two faces. One which looked into the past and one which looked into the future. Janus became the ancient symbol for resolutions. The belief in the mythological figure Janus, led to Romans asking for forgiveness from their enemies, and began a tradition of exchanging gifts before the beginning of each new year.

Smoking bans are being seen nation wide. Have they gone far enough?
Ban on Smoking
In the past few decades, laws have banned smoking from airplanes, federal and state facilities, many work places and restaurants, overall, this is a good move for the health benefit of the population as a whole. However, this is very difficult for the nicotine addicted smoker, who feels they have a right to light up a legal, highly taxed product.
I found this to be very interesting. Here is a link to a world map showing where smoking bans are in affect world-wide. Check it out!

Should state and local governments further restrictions on smoking in public places?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byGovernment has a responsibility to defend the people's freedom of choice.

Funny how people think that "freedom of choice" really means... "as long as you choose what I say!" "HEY GOVERNMENT! - GET OFF MY BACK!!"

coachbrandon.net says:
Define public. If my restaurant is a public place, then no (emphatically). If the county courthouse is the question, then yes (less than enthusiastically).
We have the right to make bad decisions in our own lives. I teach people to make better ones, but who am I to judge your decision making process.
You as a patron to pseudo-public places (ie. restaurants and bars) have the right to not support establishments that don't follow your belief system. Remember the tuna boycotts because of dolphin killing? Your money is your best voice when it comes to social modification. Speak-up!

I don't think Government should police people about this issue but at the same time, I wish smokers would be considerate and not smoke in public places.

Pumpkin13 says:
If the government wants to protect people from pollution like second hand smoke they not only need to ban people from smoking but they will need to shut down the power plants, manufacturing plants and ban auto's that run off any form of crude oil. Therefore, I say that the government needs to stop nick picking and let people have their rights.

Government is responsible for protecting the safety of its population from second hand smoke.
liveaudaciously says:
Absolutely! Second hand smoke is disgusting and dangerous. The government should take every measure possible to make our country as healthy as it can be.

nightbear says:
Unfortunately, My being a nurse has made me see the damage done by first and second hand smoke. It is very tragic, therefore, I must say we need to have the choice not to be inflicted with second hand smoke, and smoking although the choice of the individual must come second to the protection of the non smoker.

I do feel that the government has taken away lot of our freedom. But as far as second hand smoke goes, I feel that the government should protect us non-smokers. After all our health is in sake.

New Year's Resolutions - Learn How to Work from Home

A growing part of our workforce today are people who work at home. I tried many different avenues before finding a program that is very inexpensive, very educational as well as rewarding. The majority of ads you may see on-line, local papers or even on fliers are a scam! I spent several months trying to find something that would work for me. During this search, I was taken a few times by scams. Those were real blasts to my ego. A friend was also searching for a way to work from home, and she turned me on to Wealthy Affiliate. I was a bit skeptical at first, after my previous experiences, but now I am learning so much on the ins and outs of internet marketing, and building a successful work at home business. I highly recommend joining Wealthy Affiliate University, this will be a true boost to your New Year!

- People have very strong opinions and have the right to those opinions. Maybe the answer is to simply not make a resolution, just live each day with improvement in mind, then you don't set yourself up for failure

- Very good resolutions, especially looking after yourself. Often it's only when we get older that we figure out we need to take care of our bodies, by which time it is often too late and the damage is done.
