The Brain Healthy Way to Lose Weight and Keep It Off

I don't remember what I was looking for when I found this unique book on weight loss at the library, but I'm glad I did. Daniel G. Amen, M.D. is the the author and runs the Amen Clinics. His specialty is the study of the brain in which he utilizes brain scans. In the course of his work with ex-football players He has learned many things, some of which are helpful with weight loss. While much of the information is similar to other weight loss information the brain aspect introduces an interesting twist. Just thinking of things as brain healthy instead of for a diet has made it easier for me to resist some temptations. I have implemented just a few of the things suggested and am seeing results, which I find exciting. I've read through the book once and am getting ready to start it again implementing even more of it. Each chapter is equivalent to one weeks focus. Below I'll list all ten. As I stated earlier I checked this book out from the library, but I will be buying my own copy. I think you will want one too.

As I mentioned above I just happened upon this box while at the library. As I was reading it I was encouraged and as I have implemented just a few things I've been even more encouraged. I'm getting ready to go through it again and try and implement all the things from each chapter, which is designed to take 10 weeks. Below I'll give a short review of each chapter.

Know Your Motivation To Get Healthy

These are the titles of chapters 1&2. In addition to being an overview of the program the first chapter encourages you to know your numbers. Some of these numbers include your BMI, blood test results, the number of hours to sleep and many more. Because I have a thyroid condition, I get blood work done every six months. I may ask my doctor to test for some of these other things.

In chapter two there are exercises to help you determine why you want to get healthy. I've done these before with another program and its helpful to review these daily as the positive reasons help to combat the temptations that come along during the day.

Know Your Brain Type

Get Thinner, Smarter, and Happier is the rest of chapter threes title. The information in this chapter was not all that new for me and is similar to what many others say. The first part of the chapter covers the Amen Clinics Seven rules for Brain Healthy Eating. I don't know what it is but just thinking of things as brain healthy eating somehow makes it easier to choose the better choice. A couple of interesting thinks in this chapter were the fast food choices that could be made and the low cost options for healthy eating. The end of the chapter talks about keeping a food diary which many suggest, including the trainer I saw for a while. I've done this on and off, but find it difficult to do on a daily basis. When I have done it, it does help even for a few weeks after as it makes me aware of how quickly the calories add up.

One Size Does Not Fit Everyone, chapter four was the most helpful and interest to me and what makes this different form other things regarding diet that I read. Through his studies of brain scans on the overweight, Dr Amen as come up with five different brain types. He gives a brief lesson on the different regions of the brain and how under or over activity in an area can result in certain types of behavior. Then he describes the five main brain types of overeaters. This to meet is something I'd never heard before. I haven't done the questionnaire yet to determine which brain type I have but from the reading I'm guessing its the impulsive overeater. I have implemented a few of the food recommendations for this brain type and believe they are helping.

I have taken over-the-counter supplements for years, so some the those mentioned in this section I was already doing. Dr. Amen explains each supplement and provides results of studies when available, that are good for everyone, then specific supplements for each brain type. Two of the things recommended for everyone that I wasn't already doing was fish oil and Vit. D. I have added both of those to my pill regimen.

Control Your Appetite and Life, chapter 6 brain chemicals that are involved with cravings and self-control. One of those is dopamine which are increased with exercise and green tea. These are two more things that I have implemented. I was already exercising, but I'm making an effort to do more and I've replaced my afternoon soda with green tea. This chapter also includes nine strategies to help you control your cravings.

Kill the Ants

ANTsChapter seven talks about how physical and mental exercise can boost your metabolism. As with all the chapters after four (Know Your Brain Type) Dr. Amen relates how the things he's sharing work with each brain type and each chapter has stories from patients.

The other half of the Kill the Ants title is Stop them From Stealing Your Happiness and Memory, and Making You Fat. ANT's stands for automatic negative thoughts. There are ten types of ANT;s and ways to counter them. There was a few of these that I recognized in my life, but it this one will take a while to conquer.

Hypnosis and Meditation, of all the chapters this is the one that interests me the least. Even so there are still some things I will try to implement with some modifications.

The rest of the title for the last chapter is Overcome the People, Places, and Things That Sabotage Success. This chapter covers situations that we all encounter which my cause us to revert to old ways. There are strategies resist temptations.

There are also many helpful appendixes.

    Interesting, I haven't heard of this before...I'm not "into" reading much about weight loss, but interesting weight loss philosophies

    His other books talk a bout brain health as they relate to other issues. The nutrition is pretty sound, I think you'd like it.
