Heart Health - News reviews and the latest information promoting health

Heart Disease is the leading cause of death in the US and worldwide. There are many things that can be done to reverse the trend. On this lens I will be adding the latest news and press releases that promote our health and well being.

Exercise? For What? THE BEST Scientifically-backed Reasons Why You Ought To

Seniors who shun exercise are more likely to lag in basic tasks such as bathing or cooking compared with more active elderly.

Dorothy Dunlop, a research associate professor with the Institute for Healthcare Studies at Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, downplayed injury fears from those who will take exercises seriously at an advanced age.

"Moderate physical activity has plenty of perks in terms of pain improvement, and has cardiovascular benefits for all people with and without arthritis," she said.

Dunlop earlier directed a 2007 study that concluded that seniors who were already settling into arthritis and who stayed away from exercise doubled their risks of losing their ability to see through basic tasks like dressing, bathing, or cooking, vis-à-vis the more active elderly.

The new finding is good news for adults suffering from osteoarthritis. People can now exercise without fears of making their osteoarthritis flare up.

Reason 2...

Working out boosts your memory power.

At last! No more excuse for those who argue TV is the ultimate source of mental vim and vigor! Research has shown that those who exercise get better scores on memory tests. Now the latest study from Columbia University Medical Center detailed the nitty gritty how exercise affects the brain. Exercise, the study proponents discovered, pinpoints a section of the brain deep in the hippocampus, which is largely associated with normal age-related memory loss that starts at around the age of 30 for most adults.

This result is very important, since it was achieved through study of neurogenesis-growth of neurons-for the first time seen within a living brain. With the aid of an MRI imaging technique completed at Columbia, the researchers successfully detected neurogenesis following exercise. Prior to this, researchers were only able to confirm neurogenesis upon an investigation in animal studies.

Scott A. Small, M.D., associate professor of neurology at Columbia University Medical Center and the study's main author, added that no other past research so far has so exhaustively checked the various regions of the hippocampus and traced which region is most influenced by exercise. The next move in the research process is to spot the exercise regimen that has the most impact to boost cognition and bring down normal memory loss. This way, physicians may be able to recommend types of exercise to that can significantly improve memory, said Dr. Small, who is also a research scholar at the Columbia University Taub Institute for Research on Alzheimer's Disease and the Aging Brain.

Additional Columbia researchers who contributed to this study include: Ana C. Pereira, Rene Hen, Dan E. Huddleston, Adam M. Brickman, Alexander A. Sosunov, Guy M. McKhann, Truman R. Brown, Richard Sloan, and Fred "Rusty" Gage, Ph.D. of the Salk Institute.

Reason 3...

Hour-long or so sessions of gritty exertion are not even a vital must.

Brisk walking for three quarters of an hour daily over the course of one year, for example, could hike up the heart's capacity to feed oxygen to working muscles, and can result to a five percent drop in cholesterol. When you're through with exercise, you shouldn't feel tired, but happy.
