Student Loan Update

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the great tragedies affecting higher education today is the overpricing of an education that carries less and less value. Reliance on government aid by institutions that make student loans ultimately encourages poor spending habits, stifles financial innovation, and discourages prudent long-term saving by students and their parents.

The credit crisis has had a significant impact on the private student loan industry. Banks have become increasingly risk-averse, raising their loan qualification standards to levels that many consumers are unable to achieve. Despite the recent difficulties of the current crisis, total borrowing through private student loan companies grew by almost 900 percent over the past 10 years.

Education

Can Vouchers Reform Public Schools?
This Heartland Policy Study by education expert George Clowes addresses concerns about the efficacy of school vouchers that have been raised recently by some school reform advocates. The author distinguishes between "charity vouchers" and universal vouchers and explains why the former are unlikely to cause systemic reform of public schools. However, new data on the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program show that even charity vouchers demonstrate the reforming potential of school choice. Reform advocates shouldn't give up on vouchers, Clowes concludes.
Choice & Education Across the States
Choice & Education Across the States ranks state efforts to increase accountability and improve student achievement with four kinds of school choice: vouchers, charters, tax credits, and public school choice.
Ten Principles of School Choice
This small booklet, the first in a series from The Heartland Institute, provides policymakers and civic and business leaders a highly condensed yet easy-to-read guide to the debate. It presents the 10 most important principles of the school choice movement, explaining each principle in plain yet precise language.
School Reform News
School Reform News is a 20-page monthly newspaper, published 11 times a year, reporting on school reform efforts nationwide.

Its audience includes over 33,000 private school principals, administrators, and teachers; every state and national elected official in the United States; and education journalists, educational choice activists, and Heartland friends and supporters. Health Care

Research & Commentary: Health Savings Account
Health Savings Accounts are a way to provide affordable, flexible, consumer-directed health insurance for a population that has a growing need for quality coverage.
Ten Principles of Health Care Policy
The proper role of government in financing and delivering health care is one of the hottest public policy issues of our time. Some experts call for more regulation and more subsidies, while others call for less. All levels of government in the U.S. are coping with rising spending on health care for their own workforces and rapidly rising spending on programs for the poor and elderly.

This booklet is designed to help state legislators find solutions to health care problems by first identifying their causes and true extent--which often are not as they are reported in newspaper stories or touted by special interest groups--and then by presenting 10 principles that ought to guide reform efforts.
More Choices, Better Health
More Choices, Better Health: Free to Choose Experimental Drugs shows the Food & Drug Administration's lengthy drug approval process causes needless pain and suffering. The booklet presents an alternate solution that would give informed patients and their doctors easier access to experimental drugs.
Health Care News
All Kids, Universal Health Care, SCHIP and more.

How Should students be taught about Global Warming?

Al Gore documentary riddled with errors

Students are being taught about the dangers of global warming from an alarmist perspective. Some teachers have attempted to use Al Gore's documentary "An Inconvienent Truth" to teach these lessons. However, the British High Court ruled that this film cannot be used in isolation because it is riddled with errors (Read decision here).

In light of this we must be vigiliant that our children are not taught with a film that was called "partisan" and "political." Please visit my Lens "Is Your Child Being Educated or Indoctrinated about Global Warming?."
